Former Russell County star Colby Rasmus is headed "home" for a rehab stint with the Montgomery Biscuits.

Rasmus is rehabilitating a hip injury after undergoing surgery in October 2016. A 9 year MLB veteran, he has appeared in more than 1,000 games, with 156 career home runs. Thursday night was the season opener for the Montgomery Biscuits, the 14th in team history.

Based on attendance, you had better things to do.

Maybe, in the words of a long-gone actor from a now unpopular (as well as politically incorrect) movie – you don’t give a damn.

Indeed, it seems like Opening Night for the grand game of baseball is gone with the wind.

There were a few things missing on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Montgomery Biscuits held their 13th home opener on a slightly chillier than normal opening night and dropped the Mississippi Braves 7-2 but it didn’t quite have the same feel as most previous home openers because a few things were missing.

It’s a common theme among Montgomery’s sports enthusiasts. After a while, it just gets harder and harder to keep the population on board with an event.

Take the Capital City Classic, for example. Alabama and Auburn come to town every year and play in front of what is easily the most energetic baseball crowd either team will see. But each year, the attendance shrinks a little more. Although this year’s crowd of 6,219 was about 100 more fans than last year, it’s 1,000 fans less than Riverwalk Stadium was drawing four or five years ago.
