Freda Freeman-Jackson was torn.

On the one hand, as the head coach of the Alabama State women’s basketball team, she was a recruiter who wanted the talents of Bianca Jackson on her court the next four years.

On the other hand, she was a mother who wanted what was best for her daughter.

River Region teams earn berth in state finals

Jeff Davis scored the last five points of the game to stage a dramatic 42-41 come-from-behind win over Hazel Green Thursday to advance to the Class 7A girls’ state basketball championship game Saturday night at the BJCC... G.W. Carver (28-4) outscored Woodlawn by nine in the fourth quarter en route to a 54-42 victory in the AHSAA Class 6A boys’ state basketball tournament...Coach Randy Varner’s Rams (23-7) posted a close 42-40 win over Anniston (27-9) at Bill Harris Arena Thursday night to clinch a spot in the Class 5A girls state tournament finals.

Former Brew Tech star Webb named Miss Basketball for 2013

Wenonah's De'Runnya Wilson was selected the 29th Mr. Basketball while Hoover's Marqu'es Webb was named the 26th Miss Basketball by the Alabama Sports Writers Association on Thursday. The Mr. Basketball award was started in 1985 while Miss Basketball began in 1988.

Lucas Tribble's suicide squeeze bunt pushed across Harry Norman with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift LAMP to a 6-5 win over Paul Bryant in the Jason Armstrong FCA Memorial Baseball Tournament at Paterson Field on Friday.... Coach Rocky Smith earned his 100th career win in LAMP’s sweep of Montgomery Academy on Saturday.

The Golden Tigers (11-6, 3-0) won 3-2 in the first game in come-from-behind fashion. They took the second game, 8-3... Brewbaker Tech swept Ashford, 13-1 and 6-1, in the Rams’ first area series of the season... Blake Barrow led Trinity both on the mound and at the plate in the Wildcats’ sweep of Montevallo in Class 3A, Area 5 play on Saturday.

Trinity Presbyterian warmed up for the opening of area play with an easy 16-2 win over Brewbaker Tech on Tuesday at Thompson Park... The Alabama Christian Academy and St. James soccer match was delayed by officials due to lightning with 14:57 minutes left in the game on Tuesday night... Greenville and Opelika will kick off the 2010 Champions Challenge Prep Football Classic at Cramton Bowl next August. Trinity is also scheduled to play Jackson High School on Saturday.

The Rams (24-5) needed a big day from Univeristy of Virginia signee K.T. Harrell and they got it in a 65-54 victory over Columbia (Huntsville) in the boys Class 4A semifinals at the BJCC Arena on Wednesday.

Brew Tech sweeps doubleheader; LAMP feasts on Robertsdale pitching

FOLEY – Brewbaker Tech enjoyed a banner day on Wednesday, earning two wins in the Gulf Coast Classic.

For openers, the Rams beat second-ranked Childersburg, 7-3, and followed with a come-from-behind victory over Buckhorn, 11-8. Both games were played at Foley High School.

GULF SHORES - Over the course of the next few days, River Region Sports will be on the road with two teams playing in the prestigious Gulf Coast Classic baseball tournament in Gulf Shores.

Both LAMP and Brewbaker Tech are scheduled to play four games during the four days. RRS will cover the different aspects of the tournament including what the players and coaches do on a four-day trip.

LAMP head baseball coach Rocky Smith got just what he wanted this week during the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Jason Armstrong Memorial Tournament… playing time for his returning players, innings for his pitching staff. And four victories.

All that was missing was the overall title.

The Golden Tigers earned the Blue Division championship with a 6-4 victory over Brewbaker Tech at Riverwalk Stadium Saturday to finish 4-0 in the tournament. Wetumpka also earned a win on Saturday to finish undefeated and won the tiebreaker of least runs allowed between the two teams.
