Local prep softball teams come up short in state tourney

Three area teams came agonizingly close to capturing a state championship at the annual Alabama High School Athletic Association state softball tournament, led by appearances in the state finals by LAMP and Billingsley.

Hannah Lovvorn, a Marbury High cheerleader who spends almost as much time tutoring up-and-coming cheerleaders as she does perfecting her own craft, was chosen as the 2016 recipient of the Willis Bradford Christian Leadership Award on Monday night at the First United Methodist Church in Prattville.

The Montgomery Quarterback Club has announced its Players of the Week for games of Aug. 28. KJ Palmer from Marbury High School is the Public School Player of the Week and Brandon Reid from Lowndes Academy is the Private School Player of the Week.

MILLBROOK - Despite sloppy play, Stanhope Elmore (6A) was strong enough to handle visiting Marbury (5A), 49-7, Thursday in the season opener at Foshee-Henderson Stadium.

It was early August and new Sidney Lanier coach CJ Harris was bouncing around practice as the team went through position drills. Working mostly with quarterbacks and running backs, he constantly drew an eye to other parts of the field watching and, occasionally, hollering across the way with a reminder of some sort to a player.

"Just trying to keep it moving," he said. "We've got a lot of work to do. And we don't have a lot of time."

Time is now up. Game Day is here for the new coach.
