C.J. Person went through “another frustrating Friday,” as he put it, watching Catholic’s lopsided win over Prattville Christian last week.

The junior defensive tackle is happy the Knights are 2-0, but anxious to return to the football field after offseason surgery.

He’ll get that chance on Friday night in Catholic’s region opener, a huge home game against defending region champion St. James.

David Poole was just thankful for the opportunity.

The Montgomery Catholic senior was one of 41 replacement players called on to play in the Alabama All-Star Sports Week football game at Cramton Bowl after the original all-stars had scheduling conflicts. Poole, to his credit, was the first player to put his name in the game book after returning the opening kickoff and had three receptions for 25 yards.

Point guard B.J. Barker scored 18 points, including a pair of crucial free throws with 11.9 seconds left that allowed the Knights to advance to their first regional final since 2001.

The Greene County girls were struggling to find any rhythm from their perimeter shooters in warmups. The Montgomery Academy girls, meanwhile, were trying to figure out how to run their offense without point guard Tara Katz.

As a result, both teams struggled to find any offensive spark in the first half of Saturday’s 3A Central Regional. The Eagles found the answer first, using a 12-0 run late in the third quarter to put away the Tigers 54-37 at Alabama State’s Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The Montgomery Academy girls knew Monday’s sub-regional matchup with Indian Springs wouldn’t be challenging but it didn’t keep them from challenging themselves.

In the first six minutes, Indian Springs made just 1-of-6 shots and committed 14 turnovers, so the Eagles’ 25-2 lead took care of the outcome. Lost in the sloppy play and the substitutions that limited the final score to 59-25 was the play of junior center Caroline Kirkham, who had eight points in the first quarter and eight more in the third to finish with 16.

Survive and advance.

That might have been the theme for the Catholic girls in the Class 4A Area 4 championship game in the Catholic gym on Friday night.

It wasn’t their best performance, but a 38-37 win over BTW Magnet was enough to help the Lady Knights capture the area title and host a sub-regional game on Monday. Catholic will play Ashford at home tonight at 7 p.m.

“I’d go and visit a bunch of them but I never really clicked with any,” he said. “The first time I stepped on campus there, it was somewhere that this was my home, this was where I wanted to be. There wasn’t any wavering from there. It was just a matter of, now that I’m here, getting other kids to come join.”
