Lagoon Park softball in line for major renovations

When the Alabama High School Athletic Association state softball tournament’s final game was washed out on a Saturday evening after a full afternoon and evening of thunderstorms, the game was rescheduled two days later in the new Choccolocco Park in Oxford.

Certainly, the reason given had to do with the location of the park with regard to the two teams in the Class 5A finals, Scottsboro and Springville. But even casual observers could recognize the advantages of playing in the sparkling new sports complex in Calhoun County as opposed to traveling back to Montgomery and playing in a 40-year-old facility.

The Southeastern Conference will send all 13 programs to the 2017 NCAA Division I Softball Championship. The number sets a record for a conference in a single season.

The SEC earned eight national seeds with SEC regular-season champion Florida (50-6) earning the national No. 1 seed for the third straight year.

Autauga Academy coach Jeremy Deloach went over the normal strategy with sophomore Karsyn Kemsel in the bottom of the seventh inning, telling her to make sure to only swing at “her pitch.”

It wasn’t what Kemsel wanted, but she swung anyway, giving the Generals a stunning 10-9 victory over Macon East Academy and the Class AA championship in the Alabama Independent School Association state softball tournament at Lagoon Park Softball Complex.

The game might not have turned out quite the way Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson was hoping, but the Alabama State softball coach certainly couldn’t complain about the environment.

A crowd estimated at 1,500 turned out at Lagoon Park Softball Complex Field No. 6 to watch the Hornets battle the Auburn Tigers on Wednesday night and even a 14-1 loss to the Southeastern Conference power was quickly put on the backburner as the second-year coach and her players lingered on the field to sign autographs for hundreds of younger softball fans.

Alabama State softball coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson wanted to play Auburn on campus, but she knew she didn’t have the facilities to host the fifth-ranked Tigers.

“It’s not very often you can get a top five opponent to travel,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “We’re very excited about bringing Auburn into town.”

Natalie Norman, who books the events for the city’s softball facilities, was looking for a marquee matchup when she learned the Tigers were on ASU’s schedule.

Tigers, Tide get national seeds in NCAA softball

For the fourth consecutive year, the Southeastern Conference will be sending a league-record 11 teams to the tournament as the NCAA Division I Softball Committee announced its NCAA Championship bracket Sunday.

The SEC earned eight national seeds, as SEC regular season champion Florida (53-5) earned the national No. 1 seed and SEC Champion Auburn (49-9) earned the No. 4 seed. Alabama (46-12) is the No. 6 national seed, while Kentucky (43-12) is the No. 9 seed. LSU (45-15) is the No. 10 seed, and Tennessee (41-14) earned the No. 13 seed. Missouri (39-14) earned the No. 15 seed, while Georgia (40-17) rounds out the list as the No. 16 seed.

Sunday's NCAA Selection Show revealed that the Alabama State softball team will be headed to the NCAA Regional Tournament in a four-team grouping in Gainesville starting Friday with a match up against the nation’s two-time defending champions and overall No. 1 seed Florida Gators at 2:30 ET/1:30 CT.
