HS PLAYOFFS: LAMP sweeps Munford; Tallassee falls to UMS

It took LAMP three playoff rounds to find the right combination of hitting, defense and pitching, but it came together in the Class 4A quarterfinals as the Golden Tigers crushed Munford 16-2 and 8-2 to advance to the semifinals for the third time in school history.

Van Alst takes fifth title in AHSAA state wrestling championships

HUNTSVILLE - Montgomery Catholic's Zachary Van Alst led a contingent of state champions from the River Region in Saturday's championship round at the 61st annual AHSAA State Wrestling Championships Saturday at the Von Braun Center.

Tallassee's Ansley named to Tide football coaching staff

TUSCALOOSA – University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced the hiring of Derrick Ansley on Wednesday to coach the defensive backs for the Crimson Tide.

Ansley spent the past three seasons at the University of Kentucky as the cornerbacks coach (2013-14), secondary coach (2015) and was recently promoted to co-defensive coordinator for the 2016 season before accepting the position with the Crimson Tide.

Tallassee takes down Dadeville; Prattville stops Carver

TALLASSEE – There was a simple reason why Tallassee rebounded from last week’s disappointing loss to Central-Clay with a better effort on Friday night at J.E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium.

“We came in with enthusiasm,” junior linebacker Nick Talley said. “It was Dadeville. We were going to try our best against Dadeville because they’re our rivals. So we went out and tried our best and came out with a win.”

The Alabama Sports Writers Association will announce the 2014 Mr. Football recipient at its annual Mr. Football/Player of the Year luncheon Wednesday at the Montgomery Activity Center. The Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) sponsors the luncheon.

Prep football opens in high gear

Monday started for several high school football teams with rolling, stopping and starting on newly cut grass. It included a few wind sprints of 60 or more yards and plenty of drills.

Tallasse, St. James finish 1-2 in South Super Sectional

Three-time defending Class 6A state wrestling champion Thompson High School won posted 263 points Saturday to claim the AHSAA’s first South Super Sectional Class 6A Wrestling Championship held at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex. Two River Region squads, Tallassee and St.James, finished 1-2 in the Class 1A-4A sectional.

Baynes, Howard named top prep players for week

The Montgomery Quarterback Club has announced its Players of the Week for games of Oct. 11. Dezmond Howard from Hooper Academy is the Private School Player of the Week and Brandon Baynes from Tallassee High School is the Public School Player of the Week.

HUNTSVILLE - St. James earned its first-ever championship in wrestling on Saturday, edging Tallassee on the final day for the Class 1A-4A title at the 58th annual AHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Von Braun Center.
