Trinity's Loyal holds first spring practices

Trinity Presbyterian doesn’t usually hold spring football practice.

For the first time in 28 years, a new coach will be at the helm of the Wildcats’ football program. So Barry Loyal is taking advantage of a few stifling hot afternoons in May to get accustomed to his new players.

Barry Loyal embraced the winning tradition at Trinity Presbyterian School but the new Wildcat coach said to continue the tradition, the players will have to embrace a more physical style of play while continuing to focus on the fundamentals.

After cruising to a 10-run victory in the first game of a doubleheader, the Trinity Wildcats found themselves locked in a late-inning thriller with Oak Grove in the nightcap.

Trinity answered the call twice, scoring a run in the sixth, then another in the seventh to subdue the Tigers 4-3 and complete the series sweep in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs at Jason Armstrong Field.

The Trinity Wildcats took a huge step in clinching the 4A Area 4 regular-season title with a series sweep of Alabama Christian, winning on Thursday at AUM and on Friday with a 5-0 and 4-3 doubleheader sweep.

Ragsdale says family biggest reason for giving up coaching

A week after stepping down as head football coach at Trinity Presbyterian, Randy Ragsdale broke his silence and explained the timing of his decision.

Ragsdale closed out the 2016 campaign with a 33-21 loss to St. James to complete a 3-7 season, the worst of his career and the second worst in school history. Asked at the time whether he would return for a 29th season, he said he loved his dual role as head football coach and the dean of the middle school.

By March, he had changed his mind and went to Kerry Palmer to discuss his future.

If it looks like a rebuilding year for Trinity baseball, don’t be too concerned. Longtime Wildcat coach Ken Whittle has seen it before.

“If we’re playing our best baseball right now, I’m going to be very disappointed at the end,” Whittle said. “I still believe there’s three seasons – the beginning of the year, area play and the playoffs. We hope we can get to the playoffs.”

The Wildcats didn’t look too potent in their 2017 season opener, using some miscues from Andalusia for a 7-1 victory before dropping a late-afternoon game to Brewbaker Tech 3-2 on Monday afternoon at Jason Armstrong Memorial Field.

There’s a rivalry between Montgomery Academy and Trinity, but it’s even more intense between brothers Garrett and Grant Sanderson. That’s because Garrett plays for Montgomery Academy, while Grant plays for Trinity.

Defenses ruled the night for the better part of 48 minutes at Boykin Field.

But with two simple runs between the tackles, Trinity quarterback Charlie Trotman turned what could have been a record-setting sixth consecutive loss into the Wildcats’ first victory with a 16-7 win over Montgomery Academy on Friday night.

Robert Adams didn’t put on football pads until he was in the seventh grade.

At that point, the now-Trinity Presbyterian senior was more interested in baseball than football.

Ironically, it took a while before he warmed up to the sport.

Malik Cunningham from Park Crossing High School has been selected as the Public School Player of the Year. Nathan Rourke from Edgewood Academy and Robert Adams from Trinity Presbyterian School have been selected as co-winners of the Private School Player of the Year Award.

It might not be his last masterpiece, but it was certainly one of Ken Whittle’s best coaching jobs.

Trinity turned offensive on the final day of the 2015 season, pounding out 13 hits on the way to a Game 2 win, 8-5, and complete a two-game sweep of Brooks High School to win the Class 4A state baseball championship at Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

For 25 years, Trinity Presbyterian’s baseball team has been the model of consistency, making the playoffs each and every year.

Perhaps no trip to the playoffs was more exceptional than the 2015 squad, which was a handful of outs away from playoff elimination and now is battling Brooks High for the Class 4A state championship.
