PREP OPENERS: Smoke leads RRS Players to Watch list for 2017

WETUMPKA - To hear Tim Perry tell it, Kavosiey Smoke might be elected if he chose to run for office. That’s for any office.

Smoke will lead the Wetumpka Indians into one final season beginning this Friday when they face arch-rival Prattville.

He has been selected one of the Top 10 AHSAA players in the River Region for 2017.

WETUMPKA - Deandre Williams and Jay McDonald grew up together playing basketball at the local YMCA.

In all of that time, neither expected to be sitting at a table in the Wetumpka High School gymnasium one day signing a scholarship to play college football.

Wetumpka's Golden named to Hornung Watch list

The first of the preseason watch lists in college football was released on Monday and while it contained no players from Auburn or Alabama, it did highlight a familiar player in the River Region.

The Paul Hornung Award watch list was released on Monday, listing 44 of the top all-purpose players in college football, including Wetumpka’s Jamal Golden.

Local players taken in MLB Draft

Faulkner pitchers Jay Gause and Thomas Dorminy were both selected in the 10th round of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft Friday, becoming the second and third Eagle players to go in the top 10 rounds in the past three years.

Croyle to speak at final QB Club meeting

The Montgomery Quarterback Club will hold its Annual Awards Banquet on Tuesday. John Croyle will be the featured speaker. Croyle is the founder of The Big Oak Ranch and a former University of Alabama football star. The meeting will be held at the Montgomery Country Club on Narrow Lane Road with the social hour beginning at 5:30 followed by dinner at 6:30 and the program at 7.

Hawthorne, Crenshaw named QB Club Players of the Week

The Montgomery Quarterback Club has announced its Players of the Week for games of Aug. 30.

Wetumpka's Charlie Crenshaw is the Public School Player of the Week and Taylor Hawthorne from Edgewood Academy is the Private School Player of the Week. Both players will be honored at the Club’s next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Jay Jacobs, Director of Athletics at Auburn University, will be the featured speaker.
