After holding Valwood School to minus-15 total yards and without a first down in the first half, no one could have expected Autauga Academy to maintain the same level of intensity in the second half of Saturday’s meeting in the second annual Southeastern Commission of Independent Schools’ Kickoff Classic at Cramton Bowl.

The Generals came out flat in the third quarter and the Valiants took advantage of it, scoring a pair of quick touchdowns to pull back into the contest before the Generals answered with a late touchdown to secure a 38-29 victory to extend their winning streak to 14 games.

Autauga Academy coach Jeremy Deloach went over the normal strategy with sophomore Karsyn Kemsel in the bottom of the seventh inning, telling her to make sure to only swing at “her pitch.”

It wasn’t what Kemsel wanted, but she swung anyway, giving the Generals a stunning 10-9 victory over Macon East Academy and the Class AA championship in the Alabama Independent School Association state softball tournament at Lagoon Park Softball Complex.

Glover, Carr adapting to new surroundings

PRATTVILLE – The mother approaches the Autauga Academy coaching staff, the parent of a transfer that played for former Edgewood Academy coach Bobby Carr. She has the paperwork to complete her son’s transfer and brings it to Carr.

There’s one problem. Carr isn’t the head coach at Autauga. He was hired as a volunteer offensive coordinator in July by new coach Kyle Glover.

If the presence of two successful former head coaches on the same staff is a problem, neither coach will admit it. While they are several years apart, they grew up as friends in Prattville before Carr’s family eventually moved to Millbrook where he became the starting quarterback at Stanhope Elmore.

Kyle Glover had never coached football when he set foot upon Autauga Academy’s football field in 1994.

Four years later, he was named the head coach and took the Generals to the Class AA championship game in the Alabama Independent School Association state playoffs.

Nearly two decades later, Glover is returning to Autauga as its new football coach, replacing Mike Sims while admitting the Generals’ league has changed somewhat since his departure after the 1998 season.

PRATTVILLE -- When listening to the Christian Leadership Award winners from each of the seven Autauga County high schools, it was difficult to know if you fit in with the group. The awards were almost too numerous to mention, the cumulative grade-point average among the seven was a 4.02 and the servant skills displayed in church and in the community were impressive.

That was the thought entering Raegan Shackelford’s head just before she was named the recipient of the Willis Bradford Christian Leadership Award at the 29th annual Prattville YMCA-Fellowship of Christian Athletes awards banquet at the First United Methodist Church on Monday night.
