PREP RECAP: Edgewood's long winning streak ends

New Edgewood coach Eric Folmar was unsuccessful in his debut on Friday when the Wildcats' 71-game losing streak ended. (Staff Photo)

Staff Report
(August 22, 2016)
It took about 17 seconds for the new era of Edgewood Academy football to take shape.

Morgan Academy relied on a flea flicker for a touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage, setting the tone in a 46-0 rout of the overmatched Wildcats, Friday at Faulkner University.

ELMORE - With a flurry of departures from both players and coaches, it seems like new Edgewood Academy coach Eric Folmar would have taken advantage of Alabama Independent School Association rules that permitted him to start practice last Thursday.

Instead, Folmar will wait until Monday to kick off the Wildcats’ preseason practice.

TROY – It would come down to one final sling from David, but it wasn’t enough to bring down Goliath.

Marengo Academy senior Hayden Huckabee rolled right from the Edgewood 19 and lobbed his pass toward Landon Houlditch in the back of the end zone, but Jackson Tate was there to tip it away, preserving Edgewood’s 40-34 victory over the Longhorns for the Alabama Independent School Association’s Class AA state football championship at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

Montgomery Quarterback Club officials picked the perfect time to award their weekly player of the week honor to Edgewood Academy quarterback Nathan Rourke.

Rourke, who could have been selected for any of his weekly performances that have steered the Wildcats to a national-best 66 consecutive wins, threw four touchdown passes in last week’s 61-16 win over Northside, giving him an Alabama Independent School Association-record 40 touchdown passes this season.

Rourke’s last touchdown pass broke the record of 39 set by Kyle Moore of Edgewood in 2003 and later tied in 2012 by former Wildcat signal caller Dylan Ingram.

PREP RECAP: Lee wallops Lanier; Edgewood extends streak

By Tim Gayle
RRS Correspondent
(August 21, 2015)

It was a rivalry that once shaped the city’s gridiron landscape, but lately Robert E. Lee has had a dominating role in the annual matchup with Sidney Lanier.

Thursday’s season opener at Cramton Bowl was more of the same. The Generals struggled through a horrible first half before thrashing the Poets in the second half on the way to a 34-0 victory.

Edgewood does it again with seventh straight title

Another year, another dogpile for Edgewood Academy after winning its seventh-straight baseball title. (Staff Photo)

A new day brought a different attitude and another state championship for Edgewood Academy.

The Wildcats, by all accounts, should have been swept on Tuesday by Macon-East Montgomery Academy after managing just one hit in the first game and three in the second. Somehow, they found a way to win the second game 2-0 to force a third game in the best-of-three Alabama Independent School Association Class AA baseball finals at Paterson Field.

Solid pitching forces Macon East-Edgewood series to third game

By Tim Gayle

After 14 innings of stellar pitching performances, neither Edgewood Academy nor Macon-East Montgomery were able to settle which team was the best in Alabama Independent School Association’s Class AA, so the two teams will go back out on Wednesday afternoon and play for seven more innings.

Logan Coleman pitched a gem in the opener to give the Knights a 3-2 victory before Hunter Elliott came back in the second game with a three-hit shutout and a 2-0 win for the six-time defending state champions.

Macon East, Edgewood collide for state baseball title

Macon-East Montgomery Academy and Edgewood Academy split their two regular-season meetings this season, giving little indication of what to expect from the Alabama Independent School Association state baseball finals that start today at Paterson Field.

Edgewood (35-7), winners of six consecutive AISA baseball state championships, won the most recent meeting 12-0 after holding the Knights to two hits.

Macon-East Montgomery (34-9), dropping down from Class AAA to AA this season, won the early-season matchup 5-4 as ace Chapman Dean had both the win and the loss in the two meetings.

Despite difficulties, Edgewood back in title game

It’s hard to figure that the road to Troy for the Edgewood Academy Wildcats has been one of the toughest yet.

Sure, the Wildcats were the overwhelming favorites to reach the AISA Class AA championship game. It’s happened the last five years, now six years and eight times since 2003.

Still, there have been roadblocks in the name of injuries and some what of a youth movement.

With less than two minutes before halftime one would never have guessed that Edgewood Academy would defeat Hooper Academy, 57-27, on Saturday at Faulkner's John Mark Stallings Field.

With 1:35 remaining in the first half the Colts went in the wrong direction and the Wildcats took full control and secured their 32nd consecutive victory.
