AISA ELITE EIGHT RECAP: Evangel boys advance

Darryl Stewart and Ethan Johnson led a balanced effort with 10 points each as Evangel Christian advanced to the semifinals of the Alabama Independent School Association Class A basketball tournament with a 56-17 win over Patrician Academy in the Cramton Bowl Multiplex on Tuesday.

There’s a different feeling around Evangel Christian Academy this week.

“It’s been, what five or six years?” Evangel coach Andy Whatley said. “These kids are excited, excited, excited. As coaches, you say that’s a tough team we’re playing but these kids see we’re in the playoffs and all we need is two wins to get to Troy. They certainly see it through some exciting lenses.”

The Evangel Christian girls had plenty of experience against their championship opponent.

One week ago Springwood overcame an 18-point deficit to beat the Lions and eventually move on to win the region title.

In Thursday’s AISA Class AA state championship game, the situation presented itself again. This time, the Lions had it under control.

AISA Tourney recap: Evangel girls, Edgewood boys advance to finals

Charli Parker knew it was coming. She tried to prepare her Pickens Academy girls basketball team for Evangel Christian’s pressure defense, but eight minutes of adjustments proved to be too much to overcome.... Edgewood senior Josh Crawford scored nine of his 11 points in the final 3:29, lifting the Wildcats past the Longhorns 55-49 in the Alabama Independent School Association Class AA state tournament Wednesday.

PREP SCHEDULES 2014: AISA at a glance

Believe it or not, high school football teams begin practicing this week. Teams in the Alabama Independent School Association can take the field in shorts and helmets on Thursday to begin preparations for the 2014 season.

Which means it's time for the annual schedule rehearsal for River Region teams.
