Auburn garners NCAA regional bid as one of the last in

The Auburn Tigers return to the NCAA baseball regionals this week in Tallahassee, Fla. but apparently only by an eyelash.

Based on the NCAA rankings, the Tigers were one of the final teams to receive an at-large bid. They will face Central Florida in the regional opener on Friday.

Softball fans turn out to watch Auburn top Alabama State

The game might not have turned out quite the way Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson was hoping, but the Alabama State softball coach certainly couldn’t complain about the environment.

A crowd estimated at 1,500 turned out at Lagoon Park Softball Complex Field No. 6 to watch the Hornets battle the Auburn Tigers on Wednesday night and even a 14-1 loss to the Southeastern Conference power was quickly put on the backburner as the second-year coach and her players lingered on the field to sign autographs for hundreds of younger softball fans.

Alabama State softball coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson wanted to play Auburn on campus, but she knew she didn’t have the facilities to host the fifth-ranked Tigers.

“It’s not very often you can get a top five opponent to travel,” Steiner-Wilcoxson said. “We’re very excited about bringing Auburn into town.”

Natalie Norman, who books the events for the city’s softball facilities, was looking for a marquee matchup when she learned the Tigers were on ASU’s schedule.

Tigers knock off Tide again in Capital City Classic

The MAX Capital City Classic is anything but predictable. Predictions of a defensive struggle turn into an offensive shootout and evenly matched squads often rout the other when Alabama and Auburn get together at Riverwalk Stadium.

Tuesday night’s matchup actually followed the script, however. Two very average teams were on display Tuesday and Alabama, which has struggled to do the little things right in a self-destructing season, continued that trend on Tuesday night. Auburn, which has found a way to unimpressively find ways to win, continued that trend as well, taking a 4-3 victory in front of a crowd of 7,605, the largest to ever witness a game at Riverwalk Stadium and the second largest to ever watch a regular season battle between the Tigers and the Tide.

Golloway’s starter proved to be the difference as Keegan Thompson struck out 12 batters and kept the Crimson Tide bats in check for a 5-3 victory in front of 6,219 fans.
