Troy's national gain may be Camellia Bowl's loss

While Troy’s 28-24 win over Appalachian State may have cleared up a few things in the Sun Belt Conference, it did little to shed any light on the potential teams for the third annual Camellia Bowl.

“There are two solid teams, Troy and Appalachian State, but we pick third,” Camellia Bowl executive director Johnny Williams said before Saturday’s games. “The New Orleans Bowl gets the (conference) champion and the Mobile bowl picks second. They’re going to get picked by those two bowls first.

Smartt takes over as Trojans baseball coach

TROY – After serving as an assistant for 13 seasons, Mark Smartt officially assumed the head coach duties for the Troy University baseball team on Tuesday. Smartt takes over following the retirement of Bobby Pierce, who had led the Trojans since 2003.

TROY – New Troy head football coach Neal Brown announced the signing of 17 student-athletes to a grant-in-aid Wednesday to push his initial signing class as Troy’s head coach to 22 players for the 2015 season.

Pogue returns to Troy

TROY – New Troy football head coach Neal Brown announced Friday that Al Pogue will return to the football staff to coach the Trojan cornerbacks.

Pogue joined the Troy staff prior to the 2014 season after spending three years at Auburn as the director of high school relations and as a quality control assistant. Prior to his stint at Auburn, Pogue spent 13 years as a high school coach in the state of Alabama.

Blakeney to retire at the end of the season

TROY, Ala. – Troy University baseball head coach Bobby Pierce announced at a press conference Wednesday that he will retire following the 2015 season; his 13th season as the coach of the Trojans. Pierce, who is 15 wins shy of surpassing Chase Riddle for the most in school history, informed his team at a meeting Tuesday night.

TROY – Corey Robinson broke an 18-year old NCAA record and Will Scott booted a 30-yard field goal in overtime as Troy rallied for a dramatic 34-31 victory over UAB on Saturday night in the season opener for both schools at Veterans Memorial Stadium; the victory was Troy’s third straight in the series.

The win marked Troy’s first victory in an overtime game since joining the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2001.
