ASU captures SWAC eastern division volleyball crown
The Alabama State University volleyball team has captures the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Eastern Division Championship with a 3-2 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23, 15-9) win against Alabama A&M.
“I feel great, I think the girls played really hard all game” said head coach Penny Lucas-White. “The Ladies never gave up and the one thing that has kept us in it all year is that their resilient.”
Rachel Smith led the team with 21 kills and hitting .500 in the game. She was joined in double digit kills by Tiara Kelley 16 who hit .345 and Latoya Ellington 13 who hit .409 as the Lady Hornets hit .295 as a team.
Ellyn Jones led the team with 30 assists and Brooke Beasley added 28 while Luiza Griz having 19 digs.
ASU’s defense played a part in the victory as they held AAMU to a .236 hitting percentage while recording 12 total blocks. Amber Bennett led the way with four blocks.
The first game saw the two team’s battle through three tie scores before ASU went on a run pushing their lead to 17-12. The Bulldogs managed to only add four more points to their score as the Hornets ran away with set one winning 25-16 finishing with 17 team kills.
Set two saw both teams fight through the entire set beginning with four tie scores before ASU went on an early 9-5 run. The Lady Bulldogs tried to claw their way back into the set but to no avail the Hornets were too much as they pushed their lead to 17-11. After an ASU Timeout the Hornets finished off set two with a 25-20 victory led behind Luzia Griz eight dig performance.
The third set of the game showcased AAMU jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Hornets fought back and took the lead 8-6. After a couple of ties the Bulldogs scored four consecutive points to go up 15-12. The Hornets battled back in dramatic fashion to even the score 19-19. In the final stretch of the third set the Hornets were outscored 6-1 as AAMU won 25-20.
Set four of the game featured 13 tie scores with the last being at 23. From there AAMU grabbed the final two points and stole the set from ASU 25-23.
In the final set ASU held an early 7-4 lead, after a court swap the Hornets scored three consecutive points to go up 11-4. The Hornets from there fought hard and closed out the set with a 15-9 victory capturing the Eastern Division Crown.
“Alabama A&M is a phenomenal team they came in to win tonight but, I’m glad we pulled it out for the victory.” We will improve on a few things from tonight heading into the final stretch of our regular season and will be ready for the upcoming SWAC tournament.”
The Lady Hornets will finish out their regular season play on their home court with a pair of SWAC contest first, against the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University on Nov.15th followed by The Braves of Alcorn State University on Nov.16th. Both matches will begin at 7p.m.
