AUM advances in SSAC softball tourney
GULF SHORES - Second-ranked Auburn Montgomery team opened the Southern States Athletic Conference softball tournament Thursday by defeating Mobile 6-4.
The Warhawks (37-4) will now take on No. 11 William Carey in a winner’s-bracket game Friday at noon.
AUM was led by Jade Sasser and Lauren Shaw as each posted a pair of RBIs. Sasser finished 1-for-4 with a two-run double at the dish, while Shaw added a two-run single, three walks and a run scored. Therese Byrne was 2-for-3 on the day.
Cassie Daniels (17-3) earned the win after tossing four two-hit innings. She allowed two runs and struck out three. Taylor Powell followed with three innings, allowing two runs on six hits and earned the save.
Mackensie Williams suffered the loss for the Rams as she surrendered six runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Rams (17-12) were led by Carley Toretta with a double and two runs scored.
The Warhawks will return to play Friday afternoon when they face William Carey at 12 p.m.
