Troy picked fourth in preseason Sun Belt poll
TROY – Troy was picked to finish fourth in the annual Sun Belt Conference Preseason Football Coaches Poll released Saturday by the league office.
Defending co-champion UL Lafayette received all 11 first-place votes to lead the pack while the other co-champion, Arkansas State, was picked to finish second with 102 points. South Alabama received 98 points and was slotted third. Troy (84 points) and ULM (78 points) rounded out the top five.
“Fourth, first, last it doesn’t matter,” Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. “Preseason is preseason and there are a lot of things that will happen between now and the end of camp and then from week-to-week in the season. Preseason polls are fun for the fans and the media. We have a chance, if we come together as a team and find good leadership, to be a pretty good team this year, but so does everyone else in this league.”
Troy was picked to finish fifth heading into the 2013 season and finished the year tied for third. The Trojans return 14 starters from last year’s squad, including eight from an offensive unit that led the Sun Belt in scoring, total offense and passing yards.
The conference will release the Preseason All-Sun Belt Teams on Monday in advance of the league’s Football Media Day at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Tuesday.
The Trojans open fall practice on July 31. Troy’s first scrimmage coincides with on-campus Media Day on Aug. 9 while Fan Day and Football Appreciation Night is set for Aug. 16.

Troy opens the 2014 season at in-state rival UAB on Aug. 30 at Legion Field. Kickoff between the Trojans and Blazers is set for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised live on Fox College Sports.
