Ray, Bottoms take first Player of Week honors for 2014

The Montgomery Quarterback Club has announced its Players of the Week for games of Aug. 29. TJ Ray from Marbury High School is the Public School Player of the Week and Ryan Bottoms from Edgewood Academy is the Private School Player of the Week.

Both players will be honored on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Former Texas A&M and Mississippi State head coach Jackie Sherrill will be the featured speaker.

Ray, a senior receiver, had 132 yards on six receptions and three touchdowns in Marbury’s 34-20 win over Holtville. He also rushed one time for 55 yards and a touchdown. Marbury, coached by James Strickland, is 2-0 on the year and plays at Sylacauga on Friday night.

Bottoms, a senior quarterback, was 10 of 13 passing for 210 yards and four touchdowns in Edgewood’s 56-0 win over Coosa Valley. Edgewood, coach by Bobby Carr, is 1-0 on the season and hosts Glenwood Academy on Friday night.

The Montgomery Quarterback Club meets at the Montgomery Country Club. The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 and the program at 7.
