AISA ELITE EIGHT RECAP: Evangel boys advance

Darryl Stewart and Ethan Johnson led a balanced effort with 10 points each as Evangel Christian advanced to the semifinals of the Alabama Independent School Association Class A basketball tournament with a 56-17 win over Patrician Academy in the Cramton Bowl Multiplex on Tuesday.

Evangel (17-10) will face Jackson Academy on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winner advances to the state championship game on Monday at 2 p.m.

“They’ve got length, they’re athletic, they’ve got a really good point guard,” Evangel coach Kerwin Washington said of his next opponent. “We’ve got our hands full. They press, they trap, they look like they’ve got a really good squad.”

Evangel led 31-0 before Patrician’s Blake Reid put back a missed shot with 1:49 left in the first half. The Lions led 33-5 at the half and 47-8 at the end of the third quarter.

“What we try to do is play to a standard,” Washington said. “I told our guys we’re not worried about the opponent, we’re going to play the way we’re taught to play. When we can balance our scoring, that’s great offense. We’re not a one-man team.”

Jordan Brownlee led Patrician with five points.

East Memorial 62, Southern 29

Lee Crawford scored 18, A.J. Howard had 14 and Scott Carlisle added 10 as East Memorial defeated Southern in the Class A quarterfinals on Tuesday.

East Memorial will face Abbeville Christian in the semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Kurt Tucker led Southern with 12 points.

Abbeville Christian 70, Cornerstone Christian 59
Devon McCree had 19 points to lead Abbeville past Cornerstone on Monday. Brody Tyler added 16 points, followed by Dre Newman with 15 and Marcus McKey with 13. Jo Jo Joiner had 21 points to lead Cornerstone.

Jackson Academy 66, Sparta Academy 47
Alvin Forward had 21 points to lead Jackson Academy into the semifinals against Evangel on Friday.

Stone Riley led Sparta with 19 points, followed by Griffin Weaver with 15.

Eastwood 58, Southern 44
Margaret Rhodes had 19 points and Elizabeth Cowden added 10 to lead Eastwood to a 58-44 win over Southern in the AISA Class A girls state tournament at the Multiplex on Tuesday afternoon.

Eastwood will play Patrician in the semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m.
MaKayla Swindal led Southern with 24 points.

Patrician 55, Evangel Christian 20
Bailey Reid had 14 points to lead Patrician past Evangel Christian in the Class A quarterfinals and into the semifinals against Eastwood on Friday afternoon.

Andrea Stoddard led Evangel with nine points.

Abbeville Christian 47, Sumter Academy 39
Shelby Wood had 16 points and Savannah Wood added 15 as Abbeville Christian defeated Sumter Academy 47-39 in the quarterfinals of the AISA Class A girls state tournament at the Multiplex on Tuesday afternoon.

Mary Harmon Patrenos led Sumter with 21 points.

Sparta Academy 54, Marengo Academy 35
Amber Kirksey had 14 points and Gaby Weaver added 12 as Sparta Academy advanced to the semifinals of the Class A girls state tournament with a 54-35 win over Marengo Academy on Tuesday morning.

Rebekah Antonelli had 18 points to lead Marengo Academy.
