AISA ELITE EIGHT RECAP: Evangel boys advance

Darryl Stewart and Ethan Johnson led a balanced effort with 10 points each as Evangel Christian advanced to the semifinals of the Alabama Independent School Association Class A basketball tournament with a 56-17 win over Patrician Academy in the Cramton Bowl Multiplex on Tuesday.
Evangel (17-10) will face Jackson Academy on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winner advances to the state championship game on Monday at 2 p.m.
“They’ve got length, they’re athletic, they’ve got a really good point guard,” Evangel coach Kerwin Washington said of his next opponent. “We’ve got our hands full. They press, they trap, they look like they’ve got a really good squad.”
Evangel led 31-0 before Patrician’s Blake Reid put back a missed shot with 1:49 left in the first half. The Lions led 33-5 at the half and 47-8 at the end of the third quarter.
“What we try to do is play to a standard,” Washington said. “I told our guys we’re not worried about the opponent, we’re going to play the way we’re taught to play. When we can balance our scoring, that’s great offense. We’re not a one-man team.”
Jordan Brownlee led Patrician with five points.
East Memorial will face Abbeville Christian in the semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Kurt Tucker led Southern with 12 points.

Stone Riley led Sparta with 19 points, followed by Griffin Weaver with 15.
Eastwood 58, Southern 44
Eastwood will play Patrician in the semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m.
Patrician 55, Evangel Christian 20
Andrea Stoddard led Evangel with nine points.
Abbeville Christian 47, Sumter Academy 39
Mary Harmon Patrenos led Sumter with 21 points.
Sparta Academy 54, Marengo Academy 35
Rebekah Antonelli had 18 points to lead Marengo Academy.
