Darryl Stewart and Ethan Johnson led a balanced effort with 10 points each as Evangel Christian advanced to the semifinals of the Alabama Independent School Association Class A basketball tournament with a 56-17 win over Patrician Academy in the Cramton Bowl Multiplex on Tuesday.

Evangel (17-10) will face Jackson Academy on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winner advances to the state championship game on Monday at 2 p.m.

“They’ve got length, they’re athletic, they’ve got a really good point guard,” Evangel coach Kerwin Washington said of his next opponent. “We’ve got our hands full. They press, they trap, they look like they’ve got a really good squad.”

Evangel led 31-0 before Patrician’s Blake Reid put back a missed shot with 1:49 left in the first half. The Lions led 33-5 at the half and 47-8 at the end of the third quarter.

“What we try to do is play to a standard,” Washington said. “I told our guys we’re not worried about the opponent, we’re going to play the way we’re taught to play. When we can balance our scoring, that’s great offense. We’re not a one-man team.”
