AHSAA STATE FINALS: BTW-Magnet falls to Madison Academy

Combined Report
(March 1, 2017)

BIRMINGHAM - A slow start and poor shooting was too much to overcome in Booker T. Washington Magnet’s first-ever trip to the AHSAA State semifinals in the Legacy Arena on Tuesday.

Madison Academy (34-1) jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back in a 68-24 win over the Yellow Jackets in the AHSAA Class 4A State Basketball Championships. The Mustangs will face defending state champion Deshler (34-0) on Friday.

"We didn’t play our best brand of basketball,”BTW- Magnet coach Teklia Roberson said. “We couldn’t pressure them like we thought we might. We thought their young guards might turn it over some, but we couldn’t put the ball in the basket enough to set up our press. Still, I’m proud of our girls. They’ve come a long way from their freshman year until now.”

The Mustangs led 20-9 after one quarter and 40-13 at halftime. Freshman 6-foot-2 center Destinee McGhee dominated inside with 18 points and 15 rebounds. She was 8-of-10 from the field.

Madison Academy finished with 19 second-chance points and got 25 points off the bench. The Jackets shot just 19 percent for the game.

The Yellow Jackets (15-8) got 10 points from senior point guard Jada Davison. She was 5-of-5 at the foul line and BTW finished perfect on its seven free throws for the game. Paige Towns added eight points and seven rebounds, and K.T. Blanding had eight boards and four steals.

Bama signee leads Hale County into finals

Future University of Alabama player Herb Jones scored 14 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and hit key free throws late to lead Hale County to a 79-60 win over Cordova in the Class 4A Boys semifinals Tuesday at the BJCC Legacy Arena.

Jones sank six straight free throws in the final 1:48 to seal the win. He was 8-of-9 from the foul line for the game and finished with four blocked shots, three steals and two assists.

The Wildcats (27-4) will play Monroe County in the finals Friday night at 5:45 p.m.

Monroe County wins in double-OT

Madison Academy overcame an 11-point deficit to force overtime but didn’t have enough to finish off Monroe County in the second Class 4A semfinal on Tuesday.

The Tigers scored the first seven points in the second overtime to pull away from the Mustangs for a 75-66 win.

DeAndre Robinson led Monroe County with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Hillcrest-Evergreen boys and girls eliminated

The Hillcrest-Evergreen girls dropped a 55-44 decision to Pisgah in the Class 3A semifinals while the Hillcrest boys also lost in the semis, 68-42, to Plainview.
