AHSAA STATE FINALS: Hubbard wins 1A on last-second free throw

BIRMINGHAM — Eighth grader Alexandria Orr was fouled as the fourth quarter of the AHSAA Class 1A girls’ state basketball finals ended Thursday night. She would sink the second of two free throws with no time remaining to give R.A. Hubbard of Courtland a 44-43 victory and the 2017 championship over defending state champion Spring Garden at the BJCC Legacy Arena.

Orr, who had missed her first four free throws of the night, was fouled with the score tied at 43-43 when she and a Spring Garden player collided on the floor near the Spring Garden basket as time expired. She finished with nine points and seven rebounds, made 2-of-3 3-point attempts and handed out three assists to be named to the Class 1A All-State Tourney Team.

Charm Saulsberry and 1A tournament MVP Kee-Undria Bolden led Hubbard with 10 points each. Bolden also had 10 rebounds. A’Nautica Bibbs added five points and six assists.

Sacred Heart wins third-straight title

Sacred Heart Catholic captured its third Class 1A state boys’ championship in a row Thursday night beating South Lamar 82-59 at the BJCC Legacy Arena.

Dionte Wood, a 6-foot-4 junior, had 27 points, four assists, five steals, four blocked shots and six rebounds to earn MVP honors for the Cardinals. Dontavis Heath scored 17 points and Murdock Simmons had 16. Simmons also had five steals Heath had four. Kevion Nolan also scored nine points and had six assists.
