AHSAA Regional capsules

Capsule of teams from River Region participating this week in the AHSAA Regional tournaments at Alabama State and Troy

Class 1A
Autaugaville (Boys)

Record: 11-14

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Talladega County-Central (25-4), Wed.7:30 p.m.

Other side of bracket: Loachapoka (18-8) vs. Holy Spirit (19-10), 4:30 p.m.

Key players: N/A

What you may not know: Autaugaville has made a habit of making the regional tournament, making the field six of the last seven years. But since winning it all in 1995, the Class 1A state title has been elusive, despite making the finals twice in a decade.

Class 2A
St. Jude (Girls)

Record: 24-6

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Lanett (22-7), Tues., 6 p.m.

Other side of bracket: Goshen (9-8) vs. R.C. Hatch (12-14), 3 pm

Key players: Shundray Davis, Kaseama Ashbourne

What you may not know: The Lady Pirates reached the state semifinals a year ago only to lose eventual 1A champ Spring Garden. It was the team’s first berth in the state semis (and first regional title) in school history.

Class 3A
Montgomery Academy (Girls)

Record: 17-11

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Greene County, Thurs., 3 p.m.

Other side of bracket: Sumter County (22-5) vs. Montevallo (30-1), 6 pm

Key players: Vanessa Lee, Meredith Lee, Layne Doctson

What you may not know: The Lady Eagles went on the road to beat LaFayette to earn their berth in the regional. MA will attempt to win its first regional since 1999 when it won the Class 2A state title.

LAMP (Boys)

Record: 24-5

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Greene County, Thurs., 7:30 p.m.

Other side of bracket: Sumter County (23-5) vs. LaFayette (20-8), 4:30 p.m.

Key players: Alec Pitts, Gabe Brake, Bryan Young

What you may not know: Before this season, the Golden Tigers had not finished above .500 in school history. LAMP is making its first appearance in the regional after firsts that include the area tournament championship and a sub-regional victory.

Class 4A
St. James (Girls)

Record: 21-11

Region: South (Troy University)

Next game: Andalusia, Thurs., Noon

Other side of bracket: Ashford (28-3) vs. Thomasville (17-5), 9 am

Key players: Hope Olszewski, Lea Epps

What you may not know: The Lady Trojans have made the regional tournament nine times but have not made the state semifinals since 1990, five years before the tournament was moved to Birmingham.

Brewbaker Tech (Boys)

Record: 25-4

Region: South (Troy University)

Next game: Andalusia, Thurs., 10:30 a.m.

Other side of bracket: Ashford (19-9) vs. B.C. Rain (18-5), 1:30 pm

Key players: Chris Dixon, Justin Patton

What you may not know: This will be the Rams’ maiden voyage in the regional, the furthest any athletic team has been in the playoffs in school history. Brew Tech coach Chauncey Shines played at Auburn University Montgomery for Larry Chapman and was recruited to the school by current Trinity coach Jack Schweers.

Class 5A
G.W. Carver (Girls)

Record: 16-8

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: B.T. Washington, Tues., Noon

Other side of bracket: Selma (27-5) vs. Talladega (28-2), 9 a..m.

Key players: Shatavia Farris, Alondra Gray

What you may not know: The Carver girls last won a regional championship in 2003 but this will be their first attempt in Class 5A.

G.W. Carver (Boys)

Record: 20-8

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Valley (17-10), Tues., 1:30 p.m.

Other side of bracket: Selma (21-9) vs. Talladega (27-6), 10:30 am

Key players: Roquez Johnson, Tarvrious Williams, Jamel Johnson

What you may not know: It’s been a bit of a dry spell for the Wolverines in the regional, despite the team making it to Troy or ASU nearly every year in the last two decades. Carver has won just one regional title (2004) in the span. A change of classification might be the difference this time.

Class 6A

Sidney Lanier (Girls)

Record: 22-4

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Murphy (22-5), Wed., 9 a.m.

Other side of bracket: Jeff Davis (18-10) vs. Davidson (30-4), noon

Key players: Taila Arrington, Shelia Thomas, Ashley Henley

What you may not know: Lanier makes it back to the regional for the first time since 2006, when it lost to Jeff Davis in the regional finals. The Lady Poets won the state title in 2005.

Sidney Lanier (Boys)

Record: 20-8

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Murphy (25-4), Wed., 10:30 a.m.

Other side of bracket: R.E. Lee (20-6) vs. Blount (19-6), 1:30 pm

Key players: Marquis Glaze, Michael Harvey, Jeremy Hall

What you may not know: The Poets will attempt to reach the state finals for the second consecutive year and will face the same cast of characters as last year. Lanier beat Blount in the semis and Robert E. Lee in the regional finals. This year, the Poets face Murphy, which lost to Lee last year.

Jeff Davis (Girls)

Record: 20-8

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Davidson (30-4), Wed., Noon

Other side of bracket: Sidney Lanier (22-4) vs. Murphy (22-5), 9 am

Key players: Jatoria Carter, Briana Gatlin

What you may not know: The Lady Vols make their ninth appearance in the regional in the last 11 years. Should JD and Lanier meet in the regional final, it would renew the rivalry of the two schools that was built during the early part of this decade. The last time the two teams met in the regional was 2006.

Robert E. Lee (Boys)

Record: 20-6

Region: Central (Alabama State)

Next game: Blount (19-6), Wed.,1:30

Other side of bracket: Sidney Lanier (20-8) vs. Murphy (25-4), 10:30 a.m.

Key players: Adrian Nelson, Henry Timmons

What you may not know: Despite a rich history of winning state titles, Lee has never won a state championship in basketball. The Generals last made the state finals in 1997.
