AHSAA FIRST ROUND: ACA, Elmore County, Carver eliminated from playoff contention

COMBINED REPORTS

Houston Academy 49, Alabama Christian 18

DOTHAN -- Houston Academy jumped out to a 28-0 lead on the Eagles in the first half and cruised to a 49-18 win in the first round of the 3A state playoffs on Friday night.

Houston Academy (10-1) will travel to Mobile next week to play undefeated Mobile Christian (11-0) in the second round of the playoffs.

Despite the disappointing finish, Alabama Christian (6-5) extended its playoff streak to a school-record seven consecutive years with Friday’s first-round appearance.

The Eagles surrendered points on big plays, long drives and interception returns before William Milner finally broke free on a 31-yard run with 2:55 left in the first half for ACA’s first points. Houston Academy responded with a long touchdown bomb just 30 seconds later to take a 35-6 halftime lead.

Christian Snipes capped a scoring drive with a quarterback sneak midway through the third quarter and AC Walters, making his return to the lineup after an injury, scored on an 85-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Walters finished with 167 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Milner added 80 yards and a touchdown on six carries and Snipes had 67 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Snipes completed 4 of 10 passes for 86 yards, but was intercepted twice. David Ortiz-Ramirez had two receptions for 64 yards.

Jaylan McCovery led the ACA defensive effort with 10 tackles. Milner had nine tackles and Spencer Meeks had five stops.

Faith Academy 31, Elmore County 7

MOBILE -- Cade Everson scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 10-7, but Faith Academy responded with three unanswered touchdowns as the Rams rolled past Elmore County 31-7 in the first round of the 5A state playoffs.

Faith Academy (8-3) will travel to Eufaula for the second round of the playoffs next week.

Elmore County (8-3) wrapped up its most successful season since 2008 with back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 2008.

CJ Wilkes led Elmore County with 106 yards on 16 carries and Everson added 68 yards on 20 carries while catching three passes for an additional 67 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Rams got a touchdown and added a Bryson Hearn 30-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead before the Panthers marched to the end zone for their only points. Tyean Goodwill caught a 35-yard touchdown pass for a 17-7 halftime lead and the Rams broke it open with a 75-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Briarwood 25, G.W. Carver 0

The Wolverines’ first-round woes continued on Friday as the Carver offense was thwarted by a solid performance by the Lions’ defense at Cramton Bowl.

Carver suffered a blocked punt and fell behind early allowing 19 first-quarter points and never recovered.

The loss ended the season for the Wolverines at 7-4 and completed the elimination all of the five city schools from playoff contention. SIdney Lanier lost to Benjamin Russell on Thursday while the other three did not reach the post season.

Carver has lost five consecutive first-round games dating back to 2018.

Briarwood (6-5) will play host to Saraland in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs next week.
