Six different Montgomery Academy players hit 3-pointers in a 74-46 win over Lanett in the opening round of the Coach Larry Chapman Foundation Tip Off Tournament on Monday.

And the Eagles’ best 3-point shooter, Cole Caddell, wasn’t in town for Monday’s game or it likely would have been worse for the Panthers.

“I thought we played OK,” Montgomery Academy coach Jeremy Arant said. “We made a lot of shots on offense, so that makes you feel good. Defensively, (Lanett) did a real good job of pushing tempo. We weren’t great on transition defense. We get a lot of rebounds just because of our size, but we’ve got to do a better job of putting bodies on people and getting rebounds.”

Montgomery Academy (3-0) will play Brew Tech in the tournament semifinals on Tuesday at 1 p.m., while Lanett will face Notasulga at 1 p.m.

Skyler Stovall, who had 25 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, had eight points in the first minutes of the game to help the Eagles race out to a 20-11 lead, but there were also a pair of 3-pointers by Brewer Welch and another by Seth Edwards. In the second quarter, Edwards hit three of the Eagles’ five 3-pointers as Montgomery Academy cruised to a 43-18 lead at the half.

Montgomery Academy’s inside duo of Stovall and DJ Vinson, bolstered by the perimeter shooting of the Eagles, kept the Lanett defense spread out most of the game.

“They get after you and they do a really good job of changing up their defenses,” Arant said. “They’re 1-3-1 on one possession, 2-3 on another, then they’re in a three-quarter court trap. I thought our guys did a good job of sharing the ball and finding the open guy. Then they made those shots when they were open.

“When we’re passing the ball and finding open guys, we’re going to make some shots. We’ve got a lot of guys who can score. When we’re playing together and sharing the ball and getting downhill and spreading out, we’re pretty tough.”

Edwards finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, an assist and a steal, followed by Vinson with 11 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots. Brewer Welch added nine points, nine assists and four steals and Jarrett Friendly had six points and five rebounds.

Nakia Bynum had 19 points to lead Lanett, followed by Jeramiah McGilberry with 10.
