CHAPMAN TIPOFF (BOYS): MA, Autaugaville open with wins

Montgomery Academy came out of the gate firing, running past Notasulga 68-37 in the opening round of the Coach Larry Chapman Foundation Tipoff Classic at MA’s Joe Mooty Court on Monday.
The Eagles (1-0) will play Autaugaville in the second round on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., with the winner advancing to the tournament finals on Wednesday. Notasulga (2-1) will play Brew Tech on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Montgomery Academy played an up-tempo style much of the game, scoring 19 points in each of the first two quarters to take a 38-17 halftime lead, then scoring 18 points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 30 points over the Blue Devils.
“Obviously, we still have a ton of work to do, especially defensively,” Montgomery Academy coach Jeremy Arant said. “We’re still really young and inexperienced and that shows at times. There are little things defensively that we’re not doing and some things on offense that veteran players might see that these guys will see and grow into the next couple of months.”
The fast pace had its plusses in terms of fastbreak points and its minuses in terms of picking up fouls, with at least three players playing with three personal fouls in the third quarter.
“We foul a lot,” Arant said. “We try to practice with a certain level of physicality and that carries over (to the game) sometimes so we pick up some fouls. We also made some inexperienced plays that caused us to pick up a couple of extra fouls that can put you in foul trouble.”
The Eagles got 19 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore DJ Vinson, with 15 of those points coming in the third quarter as he scored all but three of the Eagles’ 18 points in that eight-minute span. Fellow sophomore Skyler Stovall had 17 points -- including 15 in the first half -- along with six steals and five rebounds.
“DJ played really well, especially in the second half,” Arant said. “Skyler kind of carried us offensively in the first half and DJ kind of carried us in the second half. (Vinson) is still only 15 years old. He has a little more experience but is still young and raw.”
Sophomore Brewer Welch added eight points and four assists, while senior JaShawn Cooper scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Kris Crayton and Khalil Johnson each had seven points for Notasulga.
Autaugaville 64, Brew Tech 58
Jaden Nixon scored 30 points as the 1A Eagles opened play in the tournament with a 64-58 win over 5A Brew Tech on Monday.
The Eagles (4-0) also got 12 points each from Deon Steele and Deshawn Hall as they took a 15-point lead at the half and held off the Rams in the second half.
Kevin Honer scored 17 points, all in the second half, to lead Brew Tech. Micahi Gilchrist added 14 points, including nine in the second half, followed by Tyler Dixon with 11 and Xavier Sutton with 10.
Autaugaville will face Montgomery Academy on Tuesday in the second round of the tournament, while Brew Tech will play Notasulga. Both games are at 11:30 a.m.
Pike Road 62, Loachapoka 41
Jayden Cooper poured in 34 points as the Patriots jumped out to a 14-0 lead entering the second quarter and cruised to a 62-41 win over the 1A Indians in the opening round of the tournament on Monday.
Dillan Johnson added eight points, all in the first half, as the Patriots jumped on Loachapoka early and were able to maintain a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.
Jamari Payne and Jay Moore each had 14 points to lead Loachapoka, followed by Khamani Key with 10.
Pike Road (2-3) will play Prattville Christian Academy in the second round of the tournament, while Loachapoka will play BTW Magnet. Both games will be on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
Prattville Christian 52, BTW Magnet 40
Brady Roberson scored seven of his 12 points in the first quarter as the Panthers jumped out to a 17-8 lead and was able to maintain a double-digit lead for most of the game in a 52-40 win over BTW Magnet in the opening round of the tournament on Monday.
Roberson also had nine rebounds for led the Panthers, while PJ Evans had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Conner Williams added 10 points and eight rebounds, Carson Roberson had eight points and Collier Connell scored six points. Cade Segars added five points, four rebounds and took three charges.
Jaivon Griffin hit seven 3-pointers to lead BTW Magnet with 23 points.
PCA (2-2) will play Pike Road in the semifinals of the tournament on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
