FCA/SPRING ROUNDUP: Elmore County beats MA; Pike Road, Providence Christian earn FCA wins

FCA TOURNEY/ BASEBALL

Elmore County 8, Montgomery Academy 1

Payton Hall pitched six solid innings, striking out seven and added two hits offensively to lead the Panthers to a win in the 28th annual FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament at Paterson Field on Thursday afternoon.

Cole Downey knocked in two runs for Elmore County while JW Clement and Nassin Bryan each added a run-scoring single and a run scored.

Parker Cook went 2 for 3 to lead the Montgomery Academy offense while Britton Kohn and Judson Lindsey each went 1 for 3. Carter Wallis and Walton Norrell also had hits for MA.

Starter Luke Nelson allowed seven runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out five in 4.1 innings of work. Harris Gowan finished up in relief, allowing three hits and one run while striking out two in 2.2 innings. 

MA returns to action on Friday in the FCA tournament against LAMP at Riverwalk Stadium at 6 p.m.

Providence Christian 7, Alabama Christian 0

ACA managed just three hits against starter Harrison Mims, who went the distance in the win over the Eagles in the FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament at Paterson Field on Thursday.

Brandon Bice was the lone ACA starter with a hit.

ACA will play again on Friday against Catholic at Paterson Field while Providence Christian will play a doubleheader at Riverwalk Stadium against Trinity and St. James.

Pike Road 22, Billingsley 0 (5 inn.)

The Patriots (9-0) erupted for nine runs in the first inning and never looked back in a win in the FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament at Paterson Field on Thursday afternoon.

Logan Shores, Jax Carlton and DJ Toliver each had three hits for the Patriots while Shores, Eli Clark and Grady Warren each had 2 runs driven in.

Peter Trull was the winning pitcher finishing with 10 strikeouts.

Pike Road returns to action on Friday to face Ariton.

Prattville Christian 19, Jeff Davis 2

Cole Houston had three hits to lead the Panthers to an easy victory in the FCA Jason Armstrong Memorial Baseball Tournament at Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday. Brooks Blus was the winning pitcher going five innings, striking out eight. Parker Blake had four RBIs.

PCA will face Brewbaker Tech on Friday at Paterson Field. Jeff Davis plays again Saturday against Catholic at Paterson Field.

 

 

Macon East Academy 15, Hardaway (Ga.) 2

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Kirkland Pugh allowed just two runs on three hits over four innings to lead the Knights to an easy win over Hardaway in the Border Wars Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Golden Park.

Luke Hoffsinger went 2 for 2 and drove in four runs as the Knights had eight hits and 13 RBIs in the tournament opener.

Macon East (6-4) returns to action in the tournament on Friday morning against Calvary Christian at Golden Park. 

 

 

SOFTBALL

Catholic 5, Stanhope Elmore 2

Alanna Aiken delivered a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Knights over the 6A Mustangs in the home opener for Catholic on Thursday afternoon.

Catholic (5-2-1) was trailing 2-1 with one out in the seventh when Aiken hit a 1-2 pitch over the right center field fence to give her team a dramatic win, driving in Auburn Wilcoxson, MaKenzie Norton and Chloe Walden with the hit. 

Carissa Gilbert pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and one earned run in seven innings while striking out 10 Mustangs. 

Aiken went 2 for 4, while Wilcoxson went 2 for 2 with three stolen bases and two runs scored.

Catholic faces Hayden in the opening round of a tournament in Wetumpka on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

 

St. James 17, Trinity 3

Morgan Parish went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and Cam Greene, KK Hall, Maddox Trumbly and Ella Ward all had two hits each as part of a 14-hit attack as the Trojans scored four runs in the first and eight in the second for a five-inning win over the Wildcats at Trinity on Thursday.

St. James starter Emerson Hagen pitched two innings to pick up the win. Seventh grader Emily Needham pitched the final three innings in relief.

  

 

GIRLS SOCCER 

Montgomery Academy 7, Marbury 0

MARBURY -- Kaitlin Phenix scored three goals to help Montgomery Academy defeat the Bulldogs in a battle of unbeatens on Thursday night.

Leighton Robertson and Virginia Meachum scored their first goals in just their second game since returning to the soccer field from the basketball court. The other two goals were scored by Haley Cox and Sophia Cho.

MA coach Joseph White called the win “a good performance on a tough field in Marbury. I thought we got after them from the first whistle and didn't give them space to breathe. Although we scored seven, I am most pleased with our defensive performance, limiting Marbury to just a single shot all game. Leighton Robertson was our player of the game. She is starting to find her feet after a great basketball season.”

 

BOYS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Hillcrest 0

TUSCALOOSA -- The MA boys swept the Patriots in tennis on Thursday, winning 9-0. 

Singles winners were Hamilton Chapman, Whit Davis, Guy Hughes, John Alford, Charlie Hill and Jackson Brown. Doubles winners were Chapman-Davis, Hughes-Hill and Alford-Brown. 

MA hosts Altamont on Tuesday at home.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Eufaula 0

The Eagles shut out section opponent 9-0 on Wednesday, allowing just one point in sweeping the Tigers at Lagoon Park.

Winning by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores for the Eagles were Gabby Barrera at No. 1, Jenna Chandler at No. 2, Mae Mae Voltz at No. 3, McRae Freeman at No. 4, Kareena Singh at No. 5 and Clara Ryan at No. 6. The doubles teams of Chandler-Voltz, Barrera-Ryan and Cate Peeples-Marylee Kelso also posted wins on Wednesday.
