FRIDAY PREPS: PCA baseball wins area series over Montgomery Academy

Prattville Christian 11-5, Montgomery Academy 2-8

PRATTVILLE -- Prattville Christian took advantage of some costly errors in the fifth inning to defeat Montgomery Academy and win the 3A Area 5 series on Friday before the Eagles rallied in the second game of the doubleheader to claim an 8-5 win over the Panthers.

Montgomery Academy, which had lost the first game of the 3A Area 5 series on Thursday by a 14-0 score, took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on Chapman Baker’s two-run home run. PCA responded with 10 unanswered runs aided by some costly MA errors.

Baker went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, while Paxton Haigler, William Marks, Kingston Nelson and Jarrett Friendly all finished with a hit.

Oscar Fiore got the start for the Eagles with a strong outing, pitching three innings and allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out two. Marks came in relief and pitched the final three innings, giving up six hits and six earned runs while striking out one.

In the second game on Friday, Reid McBride went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, using a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.

After PCA tied the game in the sixth, the Eagles answered in the seventh with three consecutive RBI singles by Fiore, John Allen Jones and Baker to break a 5-5 tie.

Andrew Hosein got the start for the Eagles and turned in a dominant performance. Hosein held PCA to one run through five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. He struck out six and allowed seven hits and five earned runs in 5.2 innings. Finley Haigler pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up just one hit while striking out one.

Montgomery Academy (12-7) return home to play host to Luverne on Monday before closing out the season with an area series against Alabama Christian on Thursday and Friday.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

St. James 12, Booker T. Washington 0

Natalie and Elliette Barton each recorded a hat trick as the Trojans rolled past Booker T. Washington 12-0 in an area game at Carlisle Field on Friday.

Barton had four assists along with her three goals, while younger sister Elliette assisted on one goal along with her three goals. KK Corley and Sana Shuford each added two goals each, while Ragan King and Gracie Russell each scored a goal.

King had two assists, while Molly Phillips, Mayson Barber and Hedda Stoerdal each recorded an assist.  

St. James (8-2) improved to 5-1 in area play and will play host to Tallassee in another area game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

 

SOFTBALL

Prattville Christian 14, Alabama Christian 1

PRATTVILLE -- Peyton Thrash went 4 for 4 with an RBI double in the first inning, a two-run single in the third and an RBI single in the fourth to lead the Panthers to a 14-1, five-inning victory over Alabama Christian on Friday at PCA.

Prattville Christian scored all the runs it would need in the first inning as Thrash doubled in a run, Sara Payton Schmidt added an RBI single and Megan Masters doubled in two runs for a 4-0 lead.

Chloe Hollon added a three-run home run to center field in the second inning. Thrash singled in two runs in the third and Schmidt added an RBI single in the third.

Thrash is 12 for 12 in the Panthers’ last three games.

Alivia Messick went the distance, allowing just two hits while striking out six and walking one in five innings of work.

Schmidt and Thrash each drove in four runs for PCA, while Chasiti Lindsey, Masters and Addison Byrd each had multiple hits.

PCA (24-5) will travel to Marbury on Tuesday.
