FRIDAY VOLLEYBALL RECAP: Catholic wins regional

Catholic needed just six sets to win the South Super Regional championship on Friday, breezing through LAMP 3-0 and UMS-Wright 3-0 to earn the top seed in the upcoming state tournament.
The Knights (34-11) will face Corner (28-6) in an opening-round game in the state volleyball tournament next Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Birmingham Cross-Plex.
LAMP (28-14) rebounded from the loss to Catholic by defeating T.R. Miller in four sets in a consolation match to earn the third seed and will face Deshler (40-18) in the 4A state quarterfinals next week in Birmingham on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Teams in 7A, 4A and 1A wrapped up play in the super regional on Friday afternoon. In 7A, McGill-Toolen defeated Auburn in the semifinals and St. Paul’s Episcopal in the finals to take the top seed. In 1A, University Charter School defeated Elba and Faith Christian to win the super regional championship.
Teams in 6A, 5A, 3A and 2A completed play in the super regional on Thursday, with Saraland, Montgomery Academy, St. Luke’s and G.W. Long winning super regional titles. Defending 3A state champion Prattville Christian was among the 16 teams in those four classifications that had qualified for the state tournament and will be traveling to Birmingham next week.
