HOLIDAY HOOPS: Capital City Classic tips off on Tuesday

The 29th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic will tip off on Tuesday at Trinity’s Captain Jack Court, featuring eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams in three days of competition that wrap up with the finals on Thursday. 

The boys’ bracket features some intriguing matchups with new participants. 

“Tallassee’s back for the first time in seven or eight years and Gulf Shores is new,” Trinity coach Matt Arrighi said. “I think it’s a good field.”

Montgomery Academy is off to an impressive start, but will face 6A Wetumpka in the opener. Catholic reached the 4A state semifinals last year but will be playing just its fourth game of the season in its opener with Prattville Christian after waiting for its players to complete their run to a state championship in football. 

The girls’ side of the bracket features defending state champions in three classifications, with 5A Pleasant Grove and 4A Prattville Christian expected to meet in a second-round matchup on Wednesday. 

Host Trinity, the defending 3A state champion, will open play in the tournament against Calhoun on Tuesday at 10 a.m., after playing in a tournament in Huntsville last weekend.
