COMBINED REPORTS

The uncertainty of the weather surrounding the approach of Hurricane Helene has forced the cancelation or postponement of several sporting events.

Two football games have been affected including Friday’s football game between Catholic and Saraland and the matchup between Wetumpka and Eufaula.

Wetumpka was scheduled to travel to Eufaula on Friday but the game has been moved to Wetumpka for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The 2025 game will be played in Eufaula.

The much-anticipated battle between the top-ranked team in Class 6A, Saraland, and the top-ranked team in Class 5A, Catholic, has been canceled and will not be made up, although the 2025 meeting between the two schools, set for Saraland, will remain on the schedule.

“Both schools have been in constant contact with each other since Monday regarding the development of a hurricane in the Gulf,” noted a press release from Catholic. “The mutual decision between both schools is the result of a variety of factors. Bottom line, the risk of uncontrolled circumstances negatively impacting preparation, travel, and gameplay is too great for either team to risk.”

Saraland (5-0) will resume play on Oct. 4 with a 6A Region 1 game at home against Baldwin County. Catholic (5-0) will resume play on Oct. 4 with a 5A Region 2 game at home against Carroll.

Most of the area’s volleyball games remain on the schedule for tonight, although Catholic’s area matchup with Holtville has been moved to Wednesday, Oct. 9, and will be played at Holtville.

In flag football, Prattville’s game with P. Julian, scheduled for Thursday at Marbury, has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. Catholic’s game at Russell County has been rescheduled for Oct. 16. Brew Tech’s game with Northside Methodist has been canceled after the Dothan private school closed its doors on Thursday and Friday in advance of the hurricane.
