MA boys, girls tennis teams win Austin Invitational tourney

DECATUR --Montgomery Academy’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams won the Austin Invitational on Saturday at Point Mallard.

For the boys, it was their second consecutive title in the event.

No. 1 Whit Davis, No. 2 Charlie Hill, No. 3 John Alford, No. 4 Jackson Brown and No. 6 Ford Morano won singles titles while No. 6 Edwin Wu was runner up.

The doubles teams of Davis-Hill at No. 1 and Alford-Brown at No. 2 won titles as well.

Davis went 3-0 in the tournament, raising his record to 18-0 this season and giving him 108 career tennis wins, moving him into second place on the school’s record list behind James Torbert’s 112 wins in 2019.

For the girls, No. 1 Gabby Barrera, No. 2 Jenna Chandler, No. 3 Kareena Singh, No. 4 Lola Campbell and No. 5 Marianna Lassner won singles titles while No. 6 Anna Powell was runner-up.

The doubles teams of Barrera-Chandler at No. 1, Campbell-Lassner at No. 2 and Singh-Powell at No. 3 won titles as well.

The MA boys (19-5) have a busy week ahead, playing 7A Section 2 opponent Smiths Station on Monday at O’Connor Tennis Center, traveling to Auburn to play the 7A Section 2 opponent Tigers on Tuesday, then facing UMS-Wright at home on Wednesday.

The girls also face Smiths Station on Monday and Auburn on Tuesday.
