MIDWEEK HOOPS: Prattville tops Selma; St. James wallops ACA

BOYS

Prattville 52, Selma 41

SELMA -- Prattville trailed by as many as 13 points in the first quarter, but fought back with a strong effort in the second and third quarter to pull out a 52-41 win over the Saints in the Selma gym on Tuesday night.

The Lions outscored Selma 15-7 in the second quarter to trim a 16-3 deficit to 23-18 at the half, then found their rhythm in the third quarter with a 22-10 run to grab the lead.

Kam Shanks had 15 points and 10 steals, along with a team-high six rebounds and two assists in the win. Tavious Hohenberger had a team-high 20 points, including 13 in the third quarter to help the Lions take control of the game.

Dakaari Nelson had 11 points and DeShawn Flannigan scored 10 to lead the Saints.

Prattville (9-12) resumes area play on Friday with a 7A Area 3 matchup at Enterprise.

 

St. James 70, Alabama Christian 44

St. James broke open a close game with strong defensive play in the second and fourth quarters to defeat the Eagles 70-44 in the 3A Area 6 opener for both teams in the ACA gym on Tuesday.

ACA actually led after the first quarter 18-15, but the Trojans held the Eagles to seven points in both the second and fourth quarters as they pulled away for a 39-25 halftime score and a 46-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Ethan Beard led the Trojans with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Paxton Wingard added 13 points with four 3-pointers as well. Matt Middleton scored 14 points -- 12 in the first half -- and Clint Houser also scored in double figures with 10 points as well.

The Trojans made 11 3-pointers in the game and also dominated at the free-throw line, making 11 of 17 attempts while the Eagles were held to only four free-throw attempts.

For ACA, Christian Snipes led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed six rebounds, but early foul trouble limited his minutes. Mac Moorer added 13 points and two assists for the Eagles, while Darius Gardner had seven points and four rebounds. The Eagles (5-11) travel to Trinity on Friday for a 3A Area 6 game.

St. James (6-5) improved to 1-0 in 3A Area 6 play and will play host to Montgomery Academy in a 3A Area 6 game on Friday.

 

Montgomery Academy 65, Chilton County 63

CLANTON -- MA used a 40-point second half, 21 in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth, to outlast Chilton County in the Tigers’ gym on Tuesday.

Skyler Stovall hit a shot in the paint and got fouled with a minute left to give MA the lead and the Eagles held on at the free-throw line over the final minute.

Cole Caddell led Montgomery Academy with 25 points, along with five rebounds and two assists. Stovall Stovall had 17 points, with 10 of those coming in the fourth quarter, grabbed six rebounds, had six assists and three steals. Seth Edwards added 10 points, grabbed four rebounds and had a block. Brewer Welch also had 10 points, all in the second half, dished out four assists and had two steals.

MA (9-7) will play at St. James on Friday in a 3A Area 6 game.

 

Booker T. Washington 64, Catholic 62

TUSKEGEE -- Catholic could not overcome a poor shooting night, falling to Booker T. Washington on the road in the 4A Area 4 opener for both squads.

Josh Palmer had 21 points, 17 rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots to lead the Knights, which struggled from the perimeter on Tuesday, hitting just 2 of 14 3-point attempts. Jayden Phifer added 19 points and seven rebounds, followed by LJ Green with 11 points, four rebounds and six assists and Courtney Williams with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Catholic (7-5) will travel to LAMP for another area game on Friday.

 

Bullock County 66, LAMP 47

UNION SPRINGS -- Bullock County jumped out to an early lead and held off the Golden Tigers on Tuesday in the 4A Area 4 opener for both teams.

Riley Parker led LAMP with 10 points, followed by Jezreel Fishoe with nine points, three assists and four steals and Ezekiel Griffin with seven points, six rebounds and three steals.

LAMP will play host to Catholic in another area game on Friday.

 

Trinity 61, Handley 56

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and held off a fourth-quarter rally by Handley to win 61-56 on Tuesday at Captain Jack County.

John Morris scored 17 points, including 10 in the first half, and Cal Bennett added 12 points, including eight in the first half, as Trinity built a 38-27 halftime lead. The Wildcats still led by 10 points at the start of the fourth quarter before Handley started chipping away.

Cannon Kyles led Handley with 15 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Jamarius Haynes added 11.

Trinity (13-5) remains home, hosting Alabama Christian on Friday in a 3A Area 6 game.  

 

Lowndes Academy 66, Crenshaw Christian 29

LOWNDESBORO -- Clayton Hussey had a double double with 22 points and 10 assists, along with eight rebounds, seven steals and a pair of blocked shots to lead the Rebels to a 66-29 rout of the Cougars in their area opener in the Lowndes Academy gym on Tuesday.

Watters Box added 10 points, six rebounds and five steals as 11 Lowndes players scored in the victory.

Zach Azar had six points and four rebounds, followed by Ashton Yelder with five points, 11 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot, Luke Lovell had five points, a rebound and a pair of steals, Trey Thomas had five points and six rebounds, Will Brassell, David Calloway and Tyler Hollingshead each had three points and Andrew Myers and Clay Duncan each had two points.

Jake Bodry led Crenshaw Christian with nine points.

Lowndes Academy will be traveling to Selma on Thursday for an area matchup with Meadowview Christian.

 

Prattville Christian 57, Alabama Christian 33

PRATTVILLE -- Carson Roberson connected on 7 of 8 3-point attempts to finish with 21 points and six rebounds in the Panthers’ 57-33 win over Alabama Christian in the PCA gym on Monday.

Cade Segars added 10 points and four rebounds, Conner Williams scored 10 points and PJ Evans filled the stat sheet with nine points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Brady Roberson scored seven points and Cooper Osborne grabbed four rebounds.

PCA (10-10) will travel to play Dallas County on Friday in an area game. ACA (5-10) will play host to St. James in a 3A Area 6 game on Tuesday.

 

Autauga Academy 50, Evangel Christian 41

PRATTVILLE -- Damien Dickerson and Cameron Wright each scored 11 points to lead the Generals to a 50-41 win over Evangel Christian on Tuesday night in the Autauga Academy gym.

Evan Peak added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Generals (4-6). Jake Skutta had seven points for Autauga.

GIRLS

Trinity 66, Handley 47

Jayden Mitchell had 16 points along with five rebounds and three assists to lead Trinity to a 19-point win over Handley at Trinity’s Captain Jack Court on Tuesday.

Maddie Smith had 14 points, seven assists and six steals, followed by Emma Kate Smith with 12 points, nine assists and six steals, Mya Moskowitz with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Lilly Smith with 12 points and three steals.

Trinity (17-2) remains at home on Friday, playing host to Alabama Christian in a 3A Area 6 matchup.  

 

Catholic 60, Booker T. Washington 19

TUSKEGEE -- Allyse Rudolph went 11 of 12 at the free-throw line, finishing with 21 points, four steals and two assists to lead the Knights to a rout of the Golden Eagles in the 4A Area 4 opener for both teams on Tuesday.

The Knights jumped out to a 27-11 first quarter lead and were up 36-13 at the half.

Hannah Smith also had 21 points, along with 11 rebounds and four steals, while Heaven Bailey had nine points, seven steals and five assists.

The Knights (15-6) continue area play on the road, traveling to LAMP on Friday.

 

LAMP 62, Bullock County 36
UNION SPRINGS -- Serenity Griffin had 23 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and six steals to lead the Golden Tigers to a rout of Bullock County in the 4A Area 4 opener for both teams on Tuesday night.

Adelai Luckie added 16 points and Ariana Cannida had 11 points and four assists for the Golden Tigers.

LAMP (11-8 overall and 1-0 in area play) returns home to host Catholic on Friday.

 

St. James 67, Alabama Christian 31

Ava Card scored 28 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had four steals as Saint James built a 34-7 halftime lead and never looked back in the 3A Area 6 opener for both teams in the ACA gym on Tuesday.

K.K. Hall added 16 points with five 3-pointers, all in the first half, while Natalie Barton recorded her first career triple double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists. Molli Pickett added six points and four rebounds and Hope McCain had four points and four rebounds.

For ACA, Katelyn Sutton had nine points and three rebounds, Rachel Rine had nine points and six rebounds and Jaide Newkirk had seven points and seven rebounds. The Eagles (7-8) will travel to Trinity on Friday for a 3A Area 6 game.

St. James won its 34th consecutive contest against the Lady Eagles dating back to 2011.

St. James (15-5) improves to 1-0 in 3A Area 6 and returns home to play Montgomery Academy in an area game on Friday. ACA

The Trojans’ junior varsity team also won, 58-19, and will host Montgomery Academy on Friday as well before playing in the Capital City Conference tournament on Monday.

 

Lowndes Academy 67, Crenshaw Christian 32

LOWNDESBORO -- Haley Briggs led four players in double figures with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals as the Rebels won their area opener with a 67-32 win over the Cougars on Tuesday night in the Lowndes Academy gym.

Molly Powell added 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and seven steals, while Cameryn Hess had 13 points, eight rebounds, an assist and a pair of steals. Catie Wallace Self finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and seven steals.

In addition, Harley Hooper had four points, two rebounds, an assist and five steals, Alice Murchison had three points and Haylon Self had two points, a rebound and an assist.

Lakin Harrell led Crenshaw Christian with 19 points.

 

Lakeside School 48, Abbeville Christian 39

EUFAULA -- Eliza Ericksen scored 20 points to lead the Chiefs to a huge area win against the Generals on Tuesday in the Lakeside gym.

Chloe Helms and Jayden Green both added 10 points for the Lady Chiefs.
