MONDAY PREPS: Montgomery Academy boys win Panama City tourney

Montgomery Academy 69, Stone Memorial (Tenn.) 62
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. -- Montgomery Academy used a fast start to jump out to a 39-29 halftime lead, then extended the lead to 16 points by the end of the third quarter on the way to a 69-62 win over Stone Memorial in the championship game of the Marlin Christmas Classic at Arnold High School on Monday.
Braden Gordon led the Eagles with 20 points, 15 in the second half, along with five rebounds and a steal. Skyler Stovall added 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, had four steals and three assists while also turning in a really good defensive performance.
Cade Segars followed with 10 points, Jarrett Friendly had nine points, six rebounds and two assists and Mason Ellis had seven points and three assists. Brewer Welch added six points, four steals and four assists.
Montgomery Academy (15-1) will take off for New Year’s, then travel to Huntsville for a game at Whitesburg Christian Academy on Thursday and Class 7A Huntsville High on Friday.
Hooper Academy 47, Sparta Academy 21
HOPE HULL -- Nolan Cole scored 22 points, including 15 in the first half, to lead the Colts past Sparta Academy on Monday at Darrell Self Gym.
Cole scored seven of his team’s 11 points in the first quarter while the Hooper defense held Sparta to a pair of field goals, one each from Koltin Barlow and Jud Robinson. Cole added eight more points in the second quarter as Hooper built a 24-12 lead at the break.
Luke Moseley added eight points for the Colts, followed by Dallas Henderson with seven.
Robinson and Brodie Fowler scored six points each to lead Sparta Academy.
Hooper Academy (14-0) remains home to play Macon East Academy on Friday.
Evangel Christian 61, Abbeville Christian 48
EUFAULA -- Evangel Christian used a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to secure the win against the Generals in the championship game of the Shoemaker-Ward Holiday Invitational Tournament at Lakeside School on Monday night.
Jordan Duncan and Tylon Shine both scored 18 points and Mekhi Williams added 12 points for Evangel Christian, while Desi Stovall finished with seven points.
Duncan was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while Shine and Williams were named to the all-tournament team.
Evangel Christian (11-1) will travel to Valiant Cross for their first area game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Southwest Georgia Academy 56, Evangel Christian 42
EUFAULA -- Erica Burton and Symone McNeil each scored 10 points for Evangel Christian in the Lions’ 56-42 loss to Southwest Georgia in the championship game of the Shoemaker-Ward Holiday Invitational at Lakeside School on Monday.
Mariah Curry added nine points for the Lions.
Evangel Christian returns to action on Jan. 7 at home against Fort Dale Academy.
Hooper Academy 48, Sparta Academy 27
HOPE HULL -- Grace Seale scored 22 points, along with eight rebounds, three steals and an assist, in the Colts’ 48-27 win over Sparta Academy in Darrell Self Gym on Monday.
Katie Robinson added six points, two steals, two rebounds and an assist, followed by Ashbee Norman with four points, 11 rebounds, three steals and four assists, Raylee Midkiff with three points, seven rebounds, two steals and three assists and Jade Taylor with three points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Henlee Garvin added five rebounds.
Hooper Academy returns to action on Friday with a home game against Macon East Academy.
