Trinity places eighth in 16-team 6A state tournament
MOBILE -- Trinity’s No. 1 singles player, James Treadwell, advanced to the finals of the 6A state tennis tournament but the remainder of the Wildcats failed to make it past the second round in Monday’s action at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Treadwell drew a first-round bye and beat Muscle Shoals’ Chase Miller in the second round and Hartselle’s Reid Collins in the semifinals. He will face Northridge’s Will Thom in the finals on Tuesday.
At No. 2, Jameson Sanders beat Hazel Green’s Aiden Ashby before losing to Hartselle’s Nolan Sparks in the second round. At No. 3, Grant Speagle beat Steven Brown of Southside-Gadsden before losing to Houston Academy’s Thomas Buntin in the second round. At No. 5, Sawyer Speagle beat Northridge’s Reid Bankston before losing to Jasper’s Heath Hartley in the second round.
Charlie Franklin lost to Muscle Shoals’ Noah Pounders in the first round at No. 4 and Hall Collett lost to Helena’s Colin Baggett in the first round at No. 6.
In doubles, Treadwell-Sanders lost to Homewood’s Colton Cox and Camden Cox in the second round at No. 1, Grant Speagle-Franklin beat Hazel Green’s Malachi Ashby and Coleson Pack before losing to Jasper’s Hayes Hopkins and Heath Hartley in the second round at No. 2 and Sawyer Speagler and Ridge Newell lost to Jasper’s Ethan Thorne and Zeke Tuggle in the first round at No. 3.
Trinity’s 15 points were good for eighth place after the first day of competition behind Mountain Brook (41), Jasper (40), Homewood (28), Northridge (28), Houston Academy (25), Hartselle (24) and McGill-Toolen (22).
Alabama Christian’s Jiwu Kim, playing in the 1A-3A tournament on Monday as an individual, lost in the first round at No. 1 singles to Palmer Hicks of Westminster-Oak Mountain.
GIRLS TENNIS
Pike Road is fourth after first day of 6A state tournament
MOBILE -- The Patriots struggled to score points in singles competition, but exceled in doubles play on Monday, placing fourth in the Class 6A state tennis tournament after the first day of competition at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Mountain Brook finished the first day in first place with 40 points, followed by Muscle Shoals (32) and UMS-Wright (29). Hartselle and Pike Road are tied for fourth place with 21 points each.
At No. 1 doubles, Naye Yeo and Riley Love defeated McAdory’s Katelyn Wilson and Aziah Byron in the first round and Helena’s Ashtyn Lackey and Elizabeth Stokes in the second round to reach the semifinal round on Tuesday.
At No. 2, Grayson Nolen and Reese Bullard defeated Hazel Green’s Lilian Backer and Niyati Patel in the first round before falling in the second round to UMS-Wright’s Rhea Mostellar and Ann-Dyas Thompson.
At No. 3, Esther Lee and Daye Yeo beat Pell City’s Anna Beth Adams and Savannah Mulvehill in the first round and Homewood’s Carter Gray and Dayton Agee to reach Tuesday’s semifinal round.
In singles, Love beat Lackey before falling to Pelham’s Allyson Pieper in the second round at No. 1, Lee beat Pelham’s Carolyn Morton in the first round before losing to Houston Academy’s Mary Parker Williams at No. 2, Naye Yeo beat Pelham’s Gracely Howatt before losing to Northridge’s Maggie Thom at No. 3 and Lara Gibson beat Gadsden City’s Anslee Mack before losing to McGill-Toolen’s Kate Bender at No. 6.
At No. 4, Nolen lost to Hartselle’s Katie Sloan in the first round and at No. 5, Daye Yeo lost to McGill-Toolen’s Celie Frances Dean in the first round.
SOFTBALL
St. James 4, Prattville 3 (8)
PRATTVILLE -- St. James scored a run in the seventh to force extra innings, then scored two more in the eighth inning to edge the Lions 4-3 on Monday.
Ava Stanford and Arden Green each went 3 for 4 to lead the Trojans, with Stanford driving in a run. Lily Stanford went 2 for 3 with an RBI, with the trio accounting for eight of the Trojans’ 11 hits.
Maty Cate Lindsey went 2 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Lions. Kaylee Robles went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple.
Emily Needham went the distance for the Trojans, allowing eight hits and three runs in eighth innings while striking out 13 and walking two in a 136-pitch performance.
Lindsey pitched the first two innings for the Lions, allowing just two hits and leaving the circle with a 2-0 lead. Kaytie Chandler took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs while walking four and striking out four in the final three innings.
St. James (42-6) will travel to Prattville Christian Academy on Tuesday and Autauga Academy on Wednesday to close out the regular season.
Trinity 10, Greenville 0
The bottom of the lineup helped Trinity capture a 10-0 victory over the Greenville Tigers on Senior Day at Trinity on Monday afternoon.
Madi Milton was 2 for 3 with a walk and RBI, Olivia Caraway was 1 for 1 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored, while Mae Mae Milton was 1 for 2 with two walks, scoring one run. Harper Johnson had a triple, driving in two runs and scoring another.
In the circle, Madi MIlton earned the win giving up two hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out seven and walking none.
Trinity (9-11) will play its last regular season game on Thursday at Andalusia.
GIRLS SOCCER
Prattville Christian 1, Chilton County 0
PRATTVILLE -- Mady Roy scored the game’s only goal as the Panthers won a defensive battle with the 6A Tigers 1-0 at Panther Stadium on Monday night.
Aiden Williams had one assist. Scarlett Mahlke recorded the shutout victory in goal.
PCA (6-9-2) will travel to Montgomery to play Brewbaker Tech on Tuesday.
BOYS SOCCER
Chilton County 3, Prattville Christian 0
PRATTVILLE -- The Panthers were shut out in their final game of the season, falling 3-0 to Class 6A Chilton County on Monday at Panther Stadium.
PCA ends the season with a record of 4-14.
In the junior varsity game, Cooper Dunn scored the Panthers’ only goal in a 9-1 loss to the Tigers. PCA ends the season at 4-8-1.
