PREP HOOPS: CCC Tourney opens Saturday; Edgewood tops Southern; Pike Road clips Lanier

Edgewood Academy 70, Southern Academy 52

LOWNDESBORO -- Austin Champion scored 24 points and Cooper Hall added 23 as the Wildcats handed Southern Academy its first loss in the Lowndes Academy Christmas Tournament on Friday.

Edgewood (7-3) will play in the championship game on Saturday.

Hall scored nine of his points in the second quarter and Champion hit three 3-pointers and added a pair of free throws for an 11-point third quarter to help the Wildcats win.

Brock Whitt added nine points, followed by Brady Whitt with eight and Thomas Justiss with six.

 Macon East Academy 59, Chambers Academy 27

CECIL -- Jacob Wilson scored 20 points and had three steals to lead the Knights to a 59-27 win over Chambers on Friday in the Macon East gym.

Wilson hit 4 of 7 from behind the 3-point arc to help Macon East to its fourth consecutive win. Brandon Wilkens added 14 points and three rebounds, Gunner Justice had 11 points, four assists and three rebounds and Jacob Johnson had seven points, two assists and a pair of rebounds in the win.

Macon East (9-2) will travel to Ezekial on Saturday and to Hooper Academy on Monday before returning home to play Edgewood Academy on Tuesday.

St. James 47, PCA 44

KJ Jackson’s layup with 20 seconds remaining proved to be enough as the Trojans held off a furious fourth quarter rally to pick up their third win of the season, defeating the PCA Panthers 47-44 on Thursday night in the St. James gym.

The game was rescheduled from its original Nov. 29 date, which included a girls’ game won by PCA. The St. James’ boys team was still participating in the football playoffs and postponed their game with the Panthers until Thursday.

The Trojans (3-1) led by seven points after the first quarter and at halftime and led 38-29 at the end of the third quarter before the Panthers, led by 23 points from Cade Segers, began hitting 3-pointers and forced turnovers to close the gap. PCA (5-6) got as close as one point in the last minute but could never take the late.

Matt Middleton led Saint James with 16 points and Jackson added 10. The Trojans return to action in the Brantley Pre-Christmas Tournament, playing Greenville on Friday and Highland Home on Saturday.

Carson Roberson added nine points and six rebounds for PCA, followed by Collier Connell with six points and PJ Evans with three points, six rebounds and four assists. Cooper Osborne grabbed seven rebounds and Brady Roberson scored three points.

PCA will play Catholic on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the opening round of the 28th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity. The tournament continues on Monday and Tuesday.

GIRLS

Pike Road 44, Sidney Lanier 22

Jazz Johnson had 11 points and KJ Fencher added nine as the Patriots defeated Sidney Lanier in Walker-Joiner Gym on Friday.

Pike Road (7-6) travels to Eufaula on Wednesday to take on Smiths Station in the first round of the tournament.

 

Edgewood Academy 49, Southern Academy 26

LOWNDESBORO -- Lindsey Brown scored 16 points to lead the undefeated Wildcats into the finals of the Lowndes Academy Christmas Tournament with a 49-26 win over Southern on Friday.

Lexie Smith added 10 points for Edgewood (10-0), followed by Jaylyn Strength with eight and Madison Martin with seven.

 

Charles Henderson 50, Pike Road 39

PIKE ROAD -- KK Hogby scored 18 points to lead Charles Henderson past Pike Road 50-39 in the Pike Road gym on Thursday night.

KJ Fencher led Pike Road with 12 points, followed by Jazz Johnson with 10 . The Patriots (6-6) will travel to Sidney Lanier on Friday. 

CCC Tourney set for this week

The 28th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic tips off on Saturday with eight games, resuming on Monday with eight more before concluding on Tuesday with the championship.

In addition to the Capital City Conference schools, the tournament includes Pike Road, LAMP, Prattville Christian Academy, Beauregard, BTW Magnet and Wetumpka.

All five Capital City Conference girls’ teams are participating, but the boys’ teams from St. James and Alabama Christian skipped the tournament, with the Trojans electing to play in another tournament in Brantley this year.
