PREP RECAP (Thursday edition): Wetumpka keeps playoff bid; Carver falls at Eufaula

Wetumpka 49, Chilton County 14

CLANTON – The Indians rolled up 686 yards in total offense in an important win over Chilton County Thursday night.

Brandon Bowman passed for 147 yards with just two completions, both went for touchdowns while Robert Rose added 104 yards passing for Wetumpka.

Justin Crumbaugh had 76 yards rushing while freshman Michael Dillard added 96 yards on just four carries.

Tavarse Murphy scored on a 79-yard reception while Rudarius Anthony added three catches for 96 yards and a score.

Defensively, Lakirklon Leonard and Jaylon Johnson each had three tackles. Dylan Price added an interception.

Wetumpka improved to 4-4 and 3-1 in Class 6A, Region 3 and will play Calera next week.

Dothan 39, Jeff Davis 18

The Jeff Davis Volunteers had their best offensive output of the season but it wasn’t enough in a Class 7A, Region 2 loss to the Wolves in a battle of winless teams at Cramton Bowl on Thursday night.

De’Wontay Peterson and Mecedrick Brown each scored touchdowns as the Vols played catch up for most of the night. JD and Dothan were tied briefly in the first quarter after Brown scored on a 36-yard run with 4:50 left in the period.

But Dothan would score 33 unanswered points to take a 39-6 lead before the Vols scored twice in the final frame.

Bauer Sharp teamed up with Jayden Folmar for three touchdown passes as part of his 250 yards in the air.

Donald Harris, who started at quarterback, also added a 55-yard run for a score late in the game. He finished with 176 yards rushing on nine carries.

Jeff Davis (0-7) will play host to Enterprise next Saturday.  

Eufaula 38, G.W. Carver 21 

EUFAULA – Three turnovers limited the Carver offense in an important Class 6A, Region 2 loss to Eufaula on Thursday.

Hess Horne threw five touchdown passes, including two to Rodarius Thomas, as the Tigers moved into a second-place tie  in the region, pending the pending the outcome of Lee’s game with Opelika on Saturday.

Marquarius Moore threw for 185 yards  and two touchdowns but also had two interceptions. He had a 52-yard touchdown pass and a 22-yard pass for a score, both to Sydney Franklin.

Carl Hopkins added a kickoff return for a touchdown in the forth quarter.

Carver (4-3, 3-2) returns home next week to face Sidney Lanier while Eufaula (6-2, 3-2) plays at home against Russell County.

Catholic 42, Childersburg 00

Jeremiah Cobb rushed for 160 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries to lead Catholic to an easy homecoming victory over Childersburg on Thursday night.

The Knights (6-2) improved to 5-0 in 3A Region 4 play and will settle the region championship next Friday against Trinity, who plays at Dadeville on Friday, at Ragsdale-Boykin Field.

Caleb McCreary was 10 of 17 for 151 yards and a touchdown, with Myles Butler catching five of those passes for 109 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown pass on the Knights’ second possession.

Butler’s first contribution came a little earlier in the game. After Childersburg went three and out, Butler returned the ensuing punt 27 yards to the Childersburg 23-yard line to set up Cobb’s scoring run a play later.

Late in the first half, Catholic drove for another score, with Cobb getting three carries for 24 yards and Butler pulling in a 20-yard pass to set up Cobb’s 9-yard scoring run.

The Knights opened the second half in similar fashion, capping a 12-play drive with another 9-yard touchdown run by Cobb to give Catholic a 28-0 lead.

Cobb scored again on a three-yard run set up by a 16-yard run by receiver DJ Carter to make it 35-0 before the reserves played the remainder of the game.

Pat Ryan had eight tackles, while Spencer Bach had seven tackles and an interception to lead the Catholic defense, which held Childersburg to 56 rushing yards and 90 total yards.

Montgomery Academy 31, Greensboro 20 

Britton Kohn rushed for a touchdown and threw for a touchdown and Jashawn Cooper churned out 104 yards on the ground as the Eagles celebrated homecoming with a 31-20 win over Greensboro on Thursday night.

The win set up a battle for the 3A Region 3 championship next week between Montgomery Academy (7-0) and Thomasville (7-0) at McLemore Field.

The two teams battled to a 14-14 halftime score, with MA getting its points on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Kohn to Judson Lindsey late in the first quarter and a 27-yard scoring run by Kohn with 5:10 remaining in the first half.

Kohn had 76 rushing yards and 41 passing yards in Thursday’s game.

Jamal Cooper, who finished with 72 rushing yards, put the Eagles ahead for good four minutes into the second half on a 49-yard scoring run. Chance Wilson added a 22-yard touchdown run later in the quarter for a 28-14 lead.

Alex Kohn closed out the scoring for Montgomery Academy with a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Lindsey led the Montgomery Academy defense with 10 tackles. Carter Wallis had six tackles and Jackson Kelly had five for the Eagles.

Pike Road 52, Headland 0 

HEADLAND – For the second consecutive week, Pike Road took advantage of turnovers to score in quick bursts, resulting in a running clock for the second half and a 52-0 win against an overmatched Headland team on Thursday night.

Pike Road (8-0) clinched a share of the 5A Region 2 championship and can claim it outright with a win in the Patriots’ next game at Greenville on Oct. 23.

Quinshon Judkins had 50 yards in limited playing time, but scored three touchdowns. Eli Clark, starting his second game at quarterback, had 96 yards passing and a touchdown, while Trey Wallace, who splits time at the position, had four carries for 77 yards, including a 52-yard scoring run. 

Marcus Hambrick had five tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception in the win.
