UPDATED PREP RECAP (Week 4) Lee wins on the road; MA blasts PCA; Lanier wins Saturday tilt

STAFF REPORT

SEALE – The Robert E. Generals scored all 28 points in the first half and made it hold up in a key Class 6A, Region 2 victory on Friday. Lee won at Russell County, 28-14.

Running back Brian Thomas and quarterback Jakel Williams each scored two touchdowns for the Generals. Thomas scored on runs of 47 and 14 yards while Williams scored on a 1-yard sneak and a 23-yard scamper.

Lee improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in region play. The Generals take off next week before facing G.W. Carver on Sept. 30. Russell County fell to 4-1 and 1-1 in region play.

Auburn 40, Jeff Davis 7

Quarterback Clyde Pittman passed for two touchdowns to lead Auburn to a 40-7 victory over Jeff Davis in Class 7A, Region 2 action at Cramton Bowl on Friday.

JD’s lone score came on a 76 yard run by quarterback Savion German in the second quarter. Otherwise, the Vols were held to 17 yards passing and 168 yards rushing for the game.

Auburn got touchdown runs from Jamarious Woods, Xavier Allen  and Trey Nelms and a fumble recovery for a score from Marcellus Josephson.

The Vols (0-4, 0-2) face Carver next Thursday. Auburn travels to Huntsville to face Bob Jones.

Sidney Lanier 28, Valley 6 (Saturday)

Tacaris Bozeman scored three touchdowns including an 87-yard scamper to start the second half to lead Lanier to its fourth win of the season and second in Class 6A, Region 2 on Saturday at Cramton Bowl.

Bozeman scored on a punt return for 65 yards late in the first quarter and added a 3-yard run for a score with 4:54 left in the game. He finished with 250 yards on the ground on 25 carries.

Lanier quarterback Braylon Jones had a touchdown pass for 30 yards to get the Poets on the board early in the game, finding Zariah Marks for the score. Jones had 65 yards passing but also three interceptions.

Valley’s lone score came on a touchdown pass from Kalen Sherrell to Kendall Parker for 23 yards.

Lanier will be at home next Friday to face Bessemer City.

Wetumpka 28, Benjamin Russell 7

WETUMPKA – Stone Minnifield rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Indians to their first victory in Class 6A, Region 3.

Justin Crumbaugh added a 4-yard run for a score while quarterback Nathan Rogers added 88 yards rushing  and one touchdown pass to P.J. Merkerson for 26 yards.

Quinn Wilson added 64 yards rushing. The Indians totaled 327 yards in total offense.

Wetumpka (2-3, 1-1) travel to Greenville next week. Benjamin Russell (0-5, 0-3) visits Smiths Station next Friday.

Tallassee 48, Elmore County 10

TALLASSEE -- Tyler Ellis accounted for 219 yards and Jayln Daniels rushed for three touchdowns as Tallassee snapped a two-game losing streak by beating the Panthers at J.E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium on Friday night.

Ellis competed 9 of 13 passes for 154 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Clayten Gough to put the Tigers up 35-3 at the half. Gough had four receptions for 94 yards.

Daniels rushed for 156 yards on 21 carries, scoring on runs of 16, 17 and 3 yards to give Tallassee a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter.

Logan Pack booted a 30-yard field goal for Elmore County to cut the Tallassee lead to 7-3 midway through the first quarter, but the Panthers would get no closer. Payton Stephenson threw a 20-yard pass to Christan Stepney for Elmore County’s only touchdown two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Stephenson was 7 of 22 for 85 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice. He added 78 rushing yards on 17 carries.

J.T. Wilson and Joseph Hooks also had touchdown runs for the Tigers, who had 433 total yards.

Tallassee (2-2) evened its 5A Region 4 record at 1-1, tied with Sylacauga for third and a game and a half behind co-leaders Central-Clay County and Holtville at 3-0. Elmore County (0-5) dropped to 0-3 in region play.

Tallassee canceled next week’s scheduled game with Pike Road and will resume region play at Beauregard on Oct. 1.

Holtville 31, Talladega 22

HOLTVILLE – The Bulldogs got 110 yards rushing and two scores from Sean Brackett in a win over Talladega on Friday.

Tanner Potts passed for 183 yards and a touchdown while John Williamson led receivers with 62 yards.  Michael Forney had eight tackles and Ty Longley had an interception and fumble recovery for Holtville.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 and 3-0 in Class 5A, Region 4. They travel to Marbury next Friday.

Montgomery Academy 49, Prattville Christian 13

PRATTVILLE -- Thomas Woodward and Judson Lindsey each threw touchdown passes and Jashawn Cooper rushed for a pair of scores as Montgomery Academy cruised to a region victory over Prattville Christian Academy on Friday night.

Woodward passed for 132 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 68 more, while Lindsey passed for 109 yards and a touchdown. Ruston Bassett was on the receiving end of one touchdown pass, accounting for 63 yards, while Alex Kohn had 71 yards receiving and scored the other touchdown. Chance Wilson added 48 yards on receptions.

Jashawn Cooper rushed for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Jamal Cooper had 13 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns, one on the ground and one on a 64-yard punt return. Greer Armstrong added 43 rushing yards.

Defensively for the Eagles, Arch Lee had nine tackles, Parker Cook had five tackles, Will Hardin had three tackles and a sack, Kameron Tuck had a pair of tackles and an interception and Hudson Whitt had four tackles and a fumble recovery.

Montgomery Academy improved to 3-0 in 3A Region 3 play, a half-game ahead of Thomasville at 2-0 and a game ahead of Southside at 2-1. The Eagles (4-1) step out of region play next week, traveling down Vaughn Road to play Catholic on Friday.

 

Catholic 49, Beulah 0

BEULAH -- The Knights jumped out to a quick lead and rested their starters on the way to a comfortable 49-0 region victory on the road on Friday.

Caleb McCreary was 3 of 4 passing for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns and added 30 yards on a pair of carries as the Knights had 486 offensive yards in the win.

Jeremiah Cobb had 170 yards on seven carries, gaining 82 more on one reception to finish with 252 total yards, an average of 31.5 yards per touch. His backup, EJ Babies, had 106 yards and a touchdown on five carries. 

Defensively, the Knights held Beulah to just 24 total yards. TJ Dudley had eight tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss, while Javen Augustus had five tackles, including three for loss.

Catholic (5-0) remains unbeaten along with Trinity in 3A Region 4, a game ahead of Dadeville and Reeltown. The Knights return home to play host to Montgomery Academy next Friday.

 

Trinity 52, Pike County 0

BRUNDIDGE -- Chase Letner scored on a pair of runs and Norris Pemberton added a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown as the Wildcats raced out to a 21-point lead in the first quarter and coasted to a region victory over the Bulldogs on Friday night.

Letner had 102 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries, scoring on a 9-yard run the first time he touched the ball on Friday and adding a 22-yard scoring run later in the quarter. Mac McClinton added a 9-yard scoring run and Herbert Wheat scored on a 10-yard run for the Wildcats.

Coleman Stanley attempted just three passes and completed just one, but the 11-yard pass to Luke Pittman resulted in a touchdown. Grayden Flowers added six extra points and a 30-yard field goal in the rout.

Defensively, Chapman Pouncey had five tackles, including two for loss, and Harrison Parkman had five tackles, including a pair of sacks. Harrison Johnson added four tackles and Chayman Wilkins had four tackles and a fumble recovery. 

Trinity (5-0) posted its fourth shutout in five games, leading 45-0 at the half. The Wildcats improved to 3-0 in 3A Region 4 play, remaining tied with Catholic atop the region standings, a game ahead of Dadeville and Reeltown. The Wildcats are idle next week before resuming region play on Oct. 1 at Reeltown.

 

Pike Road 55, Rehobeth 0

PIKE ROAD -- Quinshon Judkins rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries as the Patriots defeated Rehobeth 55-0 on Friday.

Adrian Thornton added a 38-yard scoring run on his only carry and Anthony Rogers had a 10-yard touchdown run, while Iverson Hooks threw 63 yards to Chrishon Crenshaw for a touchdown.

Pike Road blocked two punts and allowed just 57 total yards. Tre’Marcus Webb had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown, Khurtiss Perry had five tackles, three quarterback pressures and a sack for 16 yards and Brennan Jordan had four tackles and a sack for six yards in the win.

Pike Road (5-0) improved to 3-0 in 5A Region 2 play and took a half-game lead over idle Greenville (2-0) and a one-game lead over Andalusia (2-1) and Carroll (2-1). The Patriots are off next week after canceling their scheduled game with Tallassee and will travel to Troy to play Charles Henderson on Oct. 1.  

 Alabama  Christian 48, Dale County 13

The Alabama Christian Academy Eagles defeated Dale County, 48-13, in a key Class 4A, Region 2 game at Wade Black Norton Field on Friday night.

“Dale County is always a big game for us, and it has really become a rivalry,” said Summers. “We’ve played them six years in a row, and most of the time the winner of our game is going to end up hosting a playoff game.” 

Junior quarterback Hayes Hunt completed 9 out of 14 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns for the Eagles. 

Junior running back and linebacker Corey Landers had 60 yards and a touchdown off of 15 carries, as well as two catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. Landers also recorded an interception. 

Junior wide receiver and defensive back Preston Hicks had four catches for 47 yards and a touchdown along with an interception. 

“All of our guys played hard and they outplayed (Dale County) from the first snap, all the way out,” said Summers. “I feel like our guys played a lot harder than the Dale County players did tonight.” 

ACA (2-1) is idle next week before resuming region play at Ashford on Oct. 1. Dale County (2-1) travels to Headland for a non-region game next week before hosting Bullock County and St. James in consecutive weeks.

Hooper Academy 23, Banks Academy 22

MOUNTAIN BROOK -- Hooper Academy got a pair of defensive touchdowns on turnovers and held off Banks Academy 23-22 for their first win on the field in 2021.

The Colts (2-2) picked up a COVID-19 forfeit win over Coosa Valley to open the season, but had not tasted victory on the field until Friday night’s win at Mountain Brook High School. The Colts had a 38-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Denzel Coner and a fumble recovery in the end zone by Kadyn Lumley, along with a 3-yard touchdown reception by Lucas Spellman.  

R.J. Coker led the Hooper ground game with 83 yards and Zach Rusley added 25.

Coker had seven tackles and a sack to lead the Hooper defense, while Jeremy Williams had six tackles and a sack, Lumley had six tackles, a sack and three fumble recoveries, Sean Murphy had six tackles and two fumble recoveries and Ron McGinty had six tackles and two fumble recoveries.

The Colts travel to Hayneville to play arch-rival Lowndes next week, while Banks (3-2) travels to Greensboro to play Southern next week. 

 

Autauga Academy 43, Clarke Prep 7

GROVE HILL -- Autauga Academy topped the 40-point mark for the fourth time this year in as many games as the Generals rolled past Clarke Prep 43-7 on Friday night.

Robert Rose threw for a pair of touchdowns and Karl Ligon rushed for another as the Generals (4-0) remain unbeaten heading into next Thursday’s home game with Bessemer Academy.

Rose was 9 of 14 for 136 yards as Joshua Palmer had four receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown and James Wright had two receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown. 

Ligon had 104 yards on five carries, including an 89-yard touchdown run, and Landen Henry added 50 yards on six carries, including a 34-yard scoring run.

Defensively for the Generals, O’ronde Henderson had an 18-yard interception return for a touchdown and four solo tackles, including two for nine yards in losses and three sacks for 26 yards. Anden Hilyer had five solo tackles and Palmer hda four solo tackles and a safety.

Clarke Prep (1-4) returns home to host Wilcox next week. 

 

Lee-Scott Academy 31, Macon East 14

AUBURN -- Lee-Scott held Gabe Spencer and the Macon East offense in check as the Warriors won their second game in three weeks with a 31-14 win over the Knights on Friday night.

Spencer managed just 27 yards on 13 carries as the Knights scored just one offensive touchdown on a 4-yard run by quarterback Deonte Powell.

Powell completed 13 of 24 passes for 129 yards and an interception. Sanders Manning had seven receptions for 79 yards, while Tyler Daniels had three catches for 36 yards.

Dalton Nickles, who had 11 tackles on defense, scored the Knights’ other touchdown on a 40-yard fumble return.

Parker Strickland led the Macon East defense with 17 tackles, followed by Teron Wright with 12 tackles, Daniels with 11 tackles and a sack and Wade Desmairis with seven tackles and a sack.

Macon East (2-3) plays its home opener next Friday against Monroe Academy, while Lee-Scott (2-2) travels to Lanett to play Springwood next week.

 

Pike Liberal Arts 56, Edgewood 0

ELMORE -- Zakevin Pennington ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for another and Kameron Baker scored on both sides of the ball as Pike Liberal Arts shut out Edgewood 56-0 on Friday night.

Pennington scored on a 35-yard run and Baker returned an interception for a touchdown as the Patriots jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back. The Patriots added three more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 36-0 halftime lead.

Pike Liberal had 561 yards of total offense while Edgewood had trouble finding any rhythm on the ground, managing just 60 total yards. Austin Champion was 8 of 26 for 81 yards, with JT Brazell on the receiving end of five of those passes for 50 yards. 

Defensively, Bryson Booth and Colton Jones had four tackles each to lead the Wildcats.

Cason Eubanks threw touchdown passes of 30 yards to Jackson Booth, 55 yards to Ian Foster and 88 yards to Pennington to help the big-play Patriots open up a huge lead in the second quarter.

Baker finished with 141 yards and a touchdown on four carries, with Pennington adding 138 yards and two touchdowns on four carries.

The shutout was the first for Edgewood since 2018. Last year’s meeting between the two teams was forfeited to Pike Liberal Arts because of COVID-19.

Edgewood (3-2) is idle next week before hosting Lakeside on Oct. 1. Pike Liberal Arts (5-0) returns home to play Chambers next Friday.

 

Morgan Academy 36, Southern Academy 12

GREENSBORO -- Cink Minter scored five touchdowns to lead the Senators past Southern Academy on Friday night.

Minter hauled in four touchdown receptions from Andrew Thomas and scored another on a punt return to help the Senators bounce back from last week’s loss to Monroe. Allen Michael Creech recorded a safety to help Morgan to a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and Wade Mason was 4 of 4 on extra-point attempts, including two in the second quarter to extend the lead to 29-0 at the half. 

Morgan (3-1) plays host to Patrician next week, while Southern (0-4) plays host to Banks Academy. 

 

Patrician Academy 34, Tuscaloosa Academy 12

TUSCALOOSA -- Tyler Lewis threw three touchdown passes and Augustus Lewis rushed for 117 yards on 21 carries as Patrician jumped out to a 21-0 lead and held off the Knights 34-12 on Friday night.

After Jay Lindsey’s 3-yard run put the Saints on the board in the first quarter, Tyler Lewis threw 31 yards to Tate Boykin and 14 to Gavin Lewis and added the extra points for a 21-0 lead.

Jordan Evans threw a touchdown pass late in the first half to make it 21-6 and David McNeil ran 60 yards on the first play of the second half to trim the deficit to 21-12, but the Saints regained control as Carson Coody scored on a 20-yard run and Lewis threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Boykin.

Patrician (2-2) travels to Selma to play Morgan Academy next week, while Tuscaloosa (2-2) travels to Escambia Academy.
