PREP RECAP (Week 7): Carver tops Wetumpka; Pike Road rolls Russell County; ACA, Marbury win

G.W. Carver 33, Wetumpka 13

WETUMPKA - Christian Johnson threw three touchdown passes as the Wolverines raced out to a commanding 33-0 lead in an important Class 6A, Region 2 win at Wetumpka Municipal Stadium on Friday.

Johnson thew two TD passes to Marquan Jamerson to give the Wolverines a 14-0 lead and Antonio Trone added a 20-yard score before halftime, giving the Wolverines a 20-0 advantage.

Johnson threw his third touchdown pass of the night in the third period and Channing Cargill had a touchdown to close out Carver’s scoring.

Mike Dillard had a touchdown for the Indians, who fell to 6-2, 3-2 in region play.

Carver (6-1, 4-0) returns home next week for a key battle against Sidney Lanier.

Davidson 28, Park Crossing 14

Running back Derrick Butler, Jr. scored twice in the final quarter, once on an 86-yard kickoff return to lead the Warriors to their second win of the season Friday at Cramton Bowl.

The Thunderbirds, still looking for their first win of the season, had tied the game with 10 minutes remaining in the game on a Jaiden Duncan 1-yard plunge but Butler answered with the kickoff return on the ensuing kickoff.

He added a clinching score with 52 seconds remaining in the game on a 7-yard run.

The Thunderbirds trailed 7-0 at the half and 14-0 midway through the third period before scoring twice to tie the game. Solomon Beebe had an 80-yard run to pull Park Crossing to within seven points followed by Duncan’s touchdown run.

Beebe finished with 119 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Park Crossing (0-7, 0-4) travels to Russell County next week.

Pike Road 40, Russell County 7

PIKE ROAD -- Kaleb Foster threw a pair of touchdown passes to Brennan Tormey and ran in another to lead the Patriots to their fifth consecutive win with a 40-7 rout of Russell County on Friday.

Pike Road (5-2) improved to 5-0 in 6A Region 2, keeping pace with G.W. Carver for first place in the region. The Patriots will travel to Stanhope Elmore next week for a region game, then to Cramton Bowl in two weeks to decide the region championship.

Foster completed 4 of 6 passes for 84 yards. Anthony Rogers played sparingly for the Patriots, rushing for 67 yards on four carries. D.J. Williams led Pike Road in rushing with 80 yards on 16 carries.

Defensively, Jaylan Jarrett had seven tackles and Mac Ceman had 6 tackles and 2 interceptions.

 

Alabama Christian 40, Prattville Christian 7

Hayes Hunt returned from an ankle injury to throw three touchdown passes in leading the Eagles to an easy 40-7 victory over Prattville Christian on Friday at Faulkner’s John Mark Stallings Field.

Hunt threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to tailback Corey Landers 72 seconds into the contest and the rout was on. He added touchdown passes to David Ortiz-Ramirez and Avery Stuart as ACA built a 27-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Eagles added two more scores in the second quarter, one on a 77-yard kickoff return by Landers following PCA’s only touchdown, and the second half was trimmed to a pair of five-minute quarters.

Hunt injured his ankle in the second quarter of a win over Montgomery Academy two weeks ago, then sat out the Eagles’ region battle at St. James last week. He was 5 of 5 for 122 yards and three touchdowns on his return Friday.

Stuart had two receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Preston Hicks had two catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Landers rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown on six carries, Otasowie Dion had 49 yards and a touchdown on four carries and Jordan Frazier ran for 43 yards on seven carries.

Defensively, Blake Shaw led the Eagles with six tackles, followed by Preston Hicks with five tackles and William Milner, Taylor Thompson and Brady Smith with four tackles each.

Alabama Christian (4-3) evened its region record at 2-2 and is in fourth place with region games remaining at home against Greensboro next week and at Southside in two weeks.

Prattville Christian (3-4) dropped to 1-3 in region play and plays host to Trinity next week.

 

Marbury 35, Holtville 12

MARBURY -- Marbury played its most complete game of the season, using five touchdowns by Carsyn Cobb to defeat Holtville 35-12 for their first region victory of the season.

Cobb rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries and caught three passes for 41 yards and two more touchdowns as Marbury kept alive its playoff hopes with the win over Holtville.

Marbury (3-5) is 1-3 in 5A Region 3 play and can earn a playoff berth next week with a win over Shelby County and a loss by Jemison to Selma. If Holtville (3-4 overall, 2-2 in region play) loses at home to Demopolis next week, Marbury could claim the third seed in the region.

Cobb caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Fowler and Baylor Cannon added the first of five extra points to break a scoreless tie. Cobb added a 5-yard scoring run before Holtville quarterback Keiland Baker scored on a 3-yard run to make it 14-6.

Fowler threw another touchdown pass, a 13-yarder to Cobb, for a 21-6 lead at the half.

Cobb added touchdown runs of 3 and 38 yards for a 35-6 lead before Baker scored on a 7-yard run. Baker completed 6 of 18 passes for 41 yards and rushed for 165 yards on 20 carries.

Keiland Baker had 161 yards rushing and both scores for the Bulldogs.

For Marbury, Jerrel O’Neal rushed for 69 yards on seven carries and led the defensive effort with five tackles. Cody Whitford had a pair of interceptions and Jayse Price added a pair of interceptions and picked off a two-point pass by Baker after Holtville’s final touchdown.

 

Beauregard 31, Elmore County 20

ECLECTIC -- Beauregard spoiled Elmore County’s homecoming and moved a step closer to the region championship with a 31-20 win over the Panthers at Burt-Haynie Field on Friday.

AJ Wallace threw three touchdown passes and Jacori Tarver had 10 carries for 151 yards as Beauregard remained unbeaten this season.

Beauregard (7-0) travels to Lineville next week to play Central for the 5A Region 4 title. Elmore County (4-3) dropped into a fourth-place tie with Valley and will travel to Valley next week as the two teams battle for the fourth and final playoff berth in the region.

Wallace threw to Chris Gamble for a 30-yard touchdown pass and connected with Javonn Holman on touchdown passes of 77 and 29 yards as Beauregard built a 21-0 lead. Holman finished the game with three receptions for 103 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Payton Stephenson threw 27 yards to Garrett Allen to put the Panthers on the scoreboard late in the second quarter but the Panthers didn’t record another touchdown until the final three minutes of the game.

Stephenson completed 13 of 28 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown and rushed 13 times for 99 yards and a touchdown. CJ Wilkes rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and caught three passes for 62 yards.

Allen added 60 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.

 

Tallassee 20, Valley 7

TALLASSEE -- Cade Everson returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown as Tallassee celebrated homecoming by clinching a playoff berth with a 20-7 win over Valley on Friday at J.E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium.

Lil’Josh Griffin rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries as the Tigers flipped the script by starting off fast with a 12-0 lead, then building on it in the second half to record back-to-back region victories for the first time this season.

Tallassee (4-4) improved to 2-2 in 5A Region 4 play and wrapped up the third seed before next week’s region finale with Sylacauga, assuring the Tigers of a playoff trip to Selma on Nov. 4. Valley dropped to 1-3 in region play and will play host to Elmore County for the fourth and final playoff berth in the region.

Griffin added a 2-yard touchdown run late in the first half to give Tallassee a 12-0 lead before Valley answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Cam’ron Dooley to Jamarious Martin.

Griffin put the game out of reach with scoring runs of 75 and 4 yards in the second half.

Tilyn Carrell led Valley with 117 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Caden Griffith led the Tallassee defense with six tackles.

Morgan Academy 32, Autauga Academy 7

SELMA -- John Allen Ingram scored a touchdown and ran in four two-point conversions to help Morgan Academy post its fourth consecutive win with a 32-7 romp over Autauga Academy.

The Senators (5-2) improved to 4-1 in AAA play, tied for second with Glenwood with two remaining region games. Morgan travels to Monroe next week.

The Generals (3-3) lost for the third consecutive time and fell into a tie for fourth place in the region with Valiant Cross at 2-3. Autauga plays host to Glenwood next week.

Morgan jumped on Autauga quick, racing out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter with an 18-yard pass from T.B. Clements to Rhyne Williams, a 33-yard fumble return by Allen Michael Creech and a 10-yard scoring run by Ingram.

Autauga finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Noah Ray to Jordan Esco. John Gabehart added the extra point to cut the deficit to 24-7.

Clements responded on the next possession with a 14-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Crocker. Clements was 9 of 13 for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Crocker added 58 yards on six carries.

Defensively, Ingram led the Senators with nine tackles. Perrin Utsey added six.

 

Valiant Cross 34, Fort Dale 26

Valiant Cross broke a 20-20 tie with touchdown passes late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to pull away from Fort Dale 34-26 on Friday night.

Valiant Cross got a fumble return for a touchdown and an interception return for a touchdown to grab a 20-0 lead but the Eagles fought back and tied the game at 20-20. Ethan Alford threw a touchdown pass and ran for two more to pull Fort Dale even in the third quarter before Valiant Cross rallied.

Valiant Cross (2-4) improved to 2-3 in AAA play with region games remaining on the road at Lee-Scott next week and Bessemer the following week.

Fort Dale (2-5) dropped into a three-way tie for sixth place in region play at 1-4 with a crucial region game at home next week against Bessemer.

 

Hooper Academy 72, Sparta Academy 50

HOPE HULL -- Slade Russell had 157 yards and four touchdowns on six carries as the Colts ran past Sparta 72-50 on Thursday night at Davis Henry Field.

Hooper (2-5) snapped a two-game losing skid with a big offensive night and will travel to Elmore next week and LaFayette the following week to play region games against Edgewood and Chambers.

RJ Coker added a pair of touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions, rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and catching a pair of passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Zach Rusley added 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns on five carries.

Sparta dropped to 0-7 with the loss and will travel to South Choctaw next week.

 

Patrician Academy 34, Lowndes Academy 6

HAYNEVILLE -- Tate Boykin ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for two more as the Saints snapped Lowndes’ five-game winning streak with a 34-6 win on Thursday night.

Boykin scored on a 6-yard run and added the conversion run for an 8-0 lead before Carson Coody scored on a 5-yard run and added the extra point. Boykin then threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jay Lindsey for a 22-0 halftime lead.

Boykin scored on a 2-yard run and threw a touchdown pass to Matthew Mize to close out the scoring.

Lowndes (5-2) got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard pass from Clayton Hussey to Luke Lovell to make it 28-6. Hussey completed 13 of 21 passes for 116 yards and had eight tackles on defense to lead the Rebels, who travel to Eufaula to play Lakeside in a region game next week.

Coody had 179 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries to lead Patrician (7-0), which travels to Escambia Academy for a region game next week.
