PREP RECAPS: PCA, Pike Road advance to regionals; Stanhope eliminated; Macon East sweeps baseball DH

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Prattville Christian 68, Dadeville 27

DADEVILLE -- Hannah Jones topped the 1,000-point mark in her career, leading the defending state champion Panthers back to the Southeast Regionals with a 31-point, 13-rebound performance in a 68-27 win over Dadeville in a sub-regional matchup on Monday night.

Prattville Christian (32-1) will face Pike County in the regional semifinals on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Garrett Coliseum. Trinity will play Houston Academy in the other semifinal, also on Thursday, at 6 p.m.

CoCo Thomas added 13 points and 14 rebounds in Monday’s game, followed by Avery Rogers with 10 points and Ella Jane Connell with eight points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals. Makenna Simpson scored three points and Kayden Carr grabbed four rebounds. 

 

Pike Road 61, Sylacauga 28

PIKE ROAD -- Jazz Johnson scored 14 points and Jada Roberts added 12 as the Patriots cruised into the Southeast Regionals with a 61-28 romp over the Aggies in a sub-regional contest in the Pike Road gym on Monday night.

Pike Road (20-8) will play Charles Henderson, a 34-28 winner over Headland, in the regional semifinals on Friday at 9 a.m. at Garrett Coliseum. 

Everyone scored for the Patriots in the rout over Sylacauga, with Kelsey Williams, Gracie Branham and KJ Fencher all adding eight points each for Pike Road.

Helena 57, Stanhope Elmore 45

MILLBROOK -- The Stanhope Elmore Lady Mustangs were stellar defensively but came up short, 57-45, against the Helena Huskies in the Class 6A Southeast Sub-regional game on Monday night. 

The Lady Mustangs end their season with a 21-7 overall record, which is head coach Kelvin Stokes' best year to date at Stanhope Elmore. 

“To be 21-7, it’s phenomenal and I’m excited, from how I found this program to where it is now is on the right move,” said Stokes. “As far as playing hard, wanting it, and giving me everything I asked for, I’m proud of this team.”  

Kelli Johnson led the team in scoring with 18 points. Jada McLeod scored 10 points, and Jacey Haynes scored seven points.

Helena led just 27-24 at the half, but extended the lead in the third quarter with multiple 3-point shots to take a 42-33 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, the Lady Mustangs pulled to within eight points late but couldn’t close the gap as the Huskies used free throws to pull away.

 Helena will play McGill-Toolen in the Southeast Regional semifinals on Thursday at Garrett Coliseum.

BASEBALL

Macon East Academy 13-21, Crenshaw Christian 1-5

LUVERNE -- Macon East opened up the season with a pair of offensive performances, blasting the Cougars 13-1 and 21-5 in a doubleheader on Monday. 

In the first game, Jabe Boroff went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a pair of stolen bases, while Matthew Kitchens went 2 for 3 with three stolen bases and a pair of RBIs. Camden Bell, Zach Brown and Dalton Nickles each went 1 for 2

In the second game, Boroff went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and drove in four runs. Brown went 2 for 2 with a double and drove in three runs. Gunner Justice went 2 for 3 and drove with four runs, while Matthew Kitchens went 2 for 3 with a double and Hunter Timmerman went 2 for 4. 

Macon East (2-0) returns home to play Abbeville Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before traveling to Grove Hill to play in the Clarke Prep Gator Classic on Thursday. 

 

SOFTBALL

Macon East Academy 5, Crenshaw Christian 0

LUVERNE -- Kylee Smith pitched a three-hit shutout for Macon East in the season opener, leading the Knights to a 5-0 win over the Cougars on Monday.

Smith struck out 15 and walked one in a complete-game performance over seven innings.

Anna Dickson Beck went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Knights’ offense.

Abby Henderson had two of the three hits for Crenshaw Christian, going 2 for 3. She took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs and four hits over six innings while striking out 14. Molly Martin pitched the seventh inning for the Cougars.

Macon East (1-0) returns home to play Abbeville Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before traveling to Grove Hill to play in a tournament at Clarke Prep.

 

BOYS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Muscle Shoals 0

MUSCLE SHOALS -- The defending 6A state champs conclude their tour through the northwest part of the state with a 9-0 win over Muscle Shoals on Saturday.

Whit Davis, Charlie Hill, Guy Hughes, Jackson Brown, John Alford and Gaines Freeman swept the singles matches, while the doubles teams of Freeman-Hughes, Davis-Hill and Brown-Alford swept as well. 

Montgomery Academy (4-0) opens section play on Wednesday against Eufaula at Lagoon Park Tennis Center. 

 

Montgomery Academy 9, Florence 0

FLORENCE -- Montgomery Academy defeated 7A Florence High 9-0 in a hard-fought match on Friday afternoon. 

Whit Davis, John Alford, Jackson Brown, Guy Hughes, Gaines Freeman and Charlie Hill won singles matches while the doubles teams of Davis-Hill, Brown-Ron Sharma and Alford-Hughes swept the doubles matches. 

GIRLS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 8, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 1

TUSCALOOSA -- The Montgomery Academy girls swept their singles and doubles competition against highly regarded Hillcrest on Thursday, winning every line in singles except for No. 5, where Kareena Singh had to retire due to injury. 

In singles, Gabby Barrera won at No. 1 over Ham Browne 6-1, 6-1, while Jenna Chandler won at No. 2 over Elliott Armstrong 6-0, 6-4. At No. 3, Mae Mae Voltz defeated Emma Eady 6-3, 6-0 and at No. 4 Clara Ryan beat Katherine Blair-Traylor 6-1, 6-2. Hillcrest’s Megan Forrester picked up the win at No. 5 after Singh retired and at No. 6, Montgomery Academy’s Cate Peeples defeated Lauren Hubbard 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Chandler-Voltz defeated Brown-Eady 8-2 at No. 1; Barrera-Ryan beat Blair-Traylor-Forrester 8-4 at No. 2; and Peeples teamed with Mary Lee Kelso to beat Armstrong-Hubbard 8-2 at No. 3.

Montgomery Academy improved to 3-0 with the win.
