PREP REPORT: PCA girls, boys win Autauga tourney; Alabama wins Classic; softball/baseball finals to stay in Oxford

GIRLS

Prattville Christian 59, Marbury 41

PRATTVILLE -- Hannah Jones had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Panthers past Marbury 59-41 in the championship game of the Autauga County Basketball Tournament on Saturday in the PCA gym.

Jones was named the most valuable player of the tournament and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Avery Rogers and CoCo Thomas.

Thomas had 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals and Rogers had 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Panthers won the county tournament championship for the third consecutive year.

Jenna McClendon added 10 points and five rebounds to help PCA to its 11th consecutive win, while Kayden Carr had eight points, five steals and four assists.

PCA (11-1) will resume play in the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic on Saturday, playing Alabama Christian Academy at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the three-day tournament. 

St. James 66, LAMP 27

KK Hall hit six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points to lead the Trojans to an easy 66-27 win in the St. James gym on Saturday afternoon.

Ava Card added 19 points, followed by Natalie Barton with 11 and Molli Pickett with nine as the Trojans (9-3) won their fourth consecutive game and snapped LAMP’s winning streak at four.

St. James will take a week off before playing Catholic in the opening round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic on Saturday at 4 p.m.

LAMP (8-5) will play host to Brew Tech on Friday, then face Trinity in the opening round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

St. James 37, Auburn 31

Ava Card scored 21 points as the 3A Trojans defeated the 7A Tigers in a defensive battle in the St. James gym on Friday.

KK Hall added nine points for the Trojans, followed by Natalie Barton with seven. 

Sariah Daniels led Auburn High with 13 points. 

LAMP 49, Alabama Christian Academy 36

Ariana Cannida scored 22 points to lead the Golden Tigers to their fourth consecutive victory in a 49-36 win over Alabama Christian on Friday night in the LAMP gym.

Serenity Griffin added 10 points, 15 rebounds and six steals for LAMP (8-4), which travels to St. James for a Saturday game at 1:15 p.m.

Rachel Rhine led ACA with 14 points. The Eagles (3-4) travel to Catholic on Monday.

Prattville Christian 52, Prattville 24

PRATTVILLE -- Hannah Jones led the Lady Panthers with 21 points and 15 rebounds in an impressive 52-24 win over the 7A Lions in the semifinals of the Autauga County Basketball Tournament on Friday in the PCA gym.

PCA (10-1) will play Marbury in the championship game of the county tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Avery Rogers added 12 points and five rebounds for PCA, followed by CoCo Thomas with nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals. Jenna McClendon added six points and 11 rebounds, while Kayden Carr had four points, eight rebounds and four steals and Ally Blankinchip grabbed four rebounds.

Lakeside School 54, Crenshaw Christian 18

LUVERNE -- Chloe Helms scored 25 points as the Lady Chiefs stormed out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 36-point win over the Cougars on Saturday afternoon in the Crenshaw Christian gym.

Eliza Eriksen added nine points for Lakeside, followed by Addy Helms with eight points.

Catholic 65, Montgomery Academy 14

The Knights jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 35-6 halftime advantage in a 51-point win over the Eagles on Friday in the Catholic gym.

Hannah Smith led the Knights with 24 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Allyse Rudolph with 15 points and Heaven Bailey with 12 points, 12 steals and five assists.

Catholic (10-4) will remain home to play Alabama Christian on Monday. Montgomery Academy (0-9) will take a week off before playing Pike Road in the opening round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Dec. 17.

BOYS

Catholic 58, Montgomery Academy 53

Jayden Phifer had 14 points, three assists and six steals to lead the Knights to a 58-53 win over Montgomery Academy in the Catholic gym on Friday night.

Josh Palmer added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Damien Rankins had 10 points and Roderick Bristow added eight. The team’s leading scorer, LJ Green, did not play because of an injury.

Catholic (2-3) will play host to Alabama Christian on Monday.

Skyler Stovall had 23 points and five rebounds to lead Montgomery Academy, followed by DJ Vinson with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Cole Caddell with eight points. Bray Renfroe also had eight points and two steals, while JaShawn Cooper added 12 rebounds and four steals.

Montgomery Academy (5-4) will take a week off before playing Wetumpka in the opening round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic on Dec. 17.

Prattville Christian 51, Marbury 39

PRATTVILLE -- PJ Evans scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Panthers past Marbury 51-39 in the championship game of the Autauga County Basketball Tournament on Saturday in the PCA gym.

Evans was named the most valuable player of the tournament and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Brady Roberson and Cade Segars.

Roberson had 13 points and nine rebounds and Segars had 13 points and four rebounds to help PCA to its first county tournament title since 2018.

Collier Connell added five points and four rebounds, Carson Roberson had three points and seven rebounds and Cooper Osborne had three points and five rebounds for the Panthers.

PCA (5-5) will face Catholic in the opening round of the Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Autaugaville 56, Prattville 51

 PRATTVILLE - Ty Bryant scored 21 points and Zion Small added 17 points and six rebounds but it wasn’t enough in the Eagles’ win in the Autauga CountyBasketball Tourney on Thursday.

Prattville Christian 62, Autaugaville 59 (OT)

PRATTVILLE -- Cade Segars led the Panthers with 16 points to help PCA defeat Autaugaville in overtime in the semifinals of the Autauga County Basketball Tournament on Friday in the PCA gym.

PCA (4-5) will play Marbury in the championship game of the county tournament on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

PJ Evans added 13 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for PCA, followed by Brady Roberson with 13 points and eight rebounds and Carson Roberson with 12 points and four rebounds. Cooper Osborne had three points and eight rebounds and Collier Connell scored four points.

Macon East Academy 43, Edgewood Academy 41

CECIL -- Jacob Wilson scored 15 points and handed out three assists to lead the Knights to a hard-fought win over Edgewood Academy in the championship game of the Pepsi Classic at the Macon East gym on Saturday afternoon.

Keagan Roney added eight points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Knights, followed by Brandon Wilkens with eight points and five rebounds and Gunner Justice with seven points and two steals.

Austin Champion led Edgewood (6-3) with 22 points.

Macon East Academy (7-2) will play host to Southern Prep on Tuesday in an area game.

Autauga Academy 57, Chambers Academy 37

PRATTVILLE -- Cameron Wright had 17 points to lead the Generals to a 20-point win over Chambers in the Autauga gym on Friday night.

Damien Dickerson added 15 points for Autauga Academy (2-4), followed by Dezmen Dickerson with 12 and Evan Peak with seven points.

Macon East Academy 60, Hooper Academy 32

CECIL -- Brandon Wilkins had 14 points and two rebounds to lead the Knights past Hooper Academy in the opening round of the Pepsi Classic at Macon East on Friday night.

Jacob Wilson added 13 points, six assists and four steals and Keagan Roney had 12 points, seven rebounds and six steals to lead the Knights (6-2) into the finals of the tournament on Saturday afternoon against Edgewood Academy.

Football

Alabama wins Classic

MOBILE – Alabama’s All-Stars struggled for three quarters, but got a spark from an unlikely source to pull out a 14-10 win over Mississippi in the 36th Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic played at Whitney Hancock Stadium on Saturday.
The victory was the third in a row for Alabama and upped its control of the series to 25-11 advantage originating back to the first game in 1988.

Softball/Baseball

AHSAA announces five-year agreement for state finals to stay in Oxford

AHSAA Executive Director Alvin Briggs announced last week that an agreement has been reached with the City of Oxford and Jacksonville State University to host the AHSAA State Baseball Championships and State Softball Championships at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park and Jacksonville State University’s Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium through 2027.
The AHSAA State Softball Championships moved to Choccolocco Park in the spring of 2021 and returned in 2022. The AHSAA State Baseball Championships were moved last spring to Choccolocco Park’s signature baseball field for game one of each of the best 2-of-3 championship series for each classification. The final two games, if needed, were played at JSU last spring due to schedule conflict at Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium. The softball championships consist of eight-team double elimination tournaments in each of the AHSAA’s seven classes.
Both sites drew rave reviews from AHSAA member schools and fans that attended the 2021 and 2022 softball championships and the 2022 baseball championships.
“We are excited to have our state championships in both sports locked in for the next five years and hopefully for many years to come,” said Briggs. “Our experience with softball at Choccolocco Park and baseball last spring at Choccolocco Park and JSU was incredible. We had packed crowds for most of our games. Both sites provided real championship experiences and life-long memories for our teams, schools and communities that traveled to attend.”
