PREP ROUNDUP: LAMP baseball tops Tallassee; MA soccer sweeps Catholic

BASEBALL

LAMP 11, Tallassee 1 (6 inn.)

TALLASSEE - Lance Phung pitched four solid innings, striking out five and three different batters each had two hits to lead the Golden Tigers to the win over homestanding Tallassee on Thursday.

Seth Hudson, Oliver Stephens and Todd Davis each had two hits with Davis driving in four runs.

LAMP (2-3) will face Park Crossing on Friday at Paterson Field. Tallassee (4-3) plays Pike Road on Friday.

Macon East Academy 15, Crenshaw Christian 0

LUVERNE – Colby Cox threw a complete game shutout and was helped by a Macon East offense that scored nine runs in the fifth inning to propel the Knights to a 15-0 win over Crenshaw Christian on Thursday.

Cole Hines, Cox, Parker Whittle, Derrick Hooks, Luke Noffsinger and Logan Hines each had RBIs in the fifth for the Knights. 

Chandler Mitchell took the loss for Crenshaw Christian Academy, surrendering one run on one hit over two innings, striking out two and walking zero. 

Macon East (3-3) will travel to Chambers Academy today for a doubleheader that starts at 3:30 p.m.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Montgomery Academy 4, Catholic 0

Lucas Rizzo scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead Montgomery Academy to a 4-0 win over Catholic on Thursday evening.

Rizzo, who now has a team-leading 10 goals, opened the scoring with an assist by Bobby Eskridge, then assisted Russell Hughes on a goal for a 2-0 lead. Alex Kohn scored the next goal with an assist from Eskridge before Rizzo closed out the scoring. Goalkeeper Will Beringer preserved the shutout.

Montgomery Academy (6-1) will play Brew Tech at home on Saturday at 6 p.m.

In junior varsity action, Montgomery Academy defeated Catholic 4-1 at Catholic on Wednesday as Will Ashworth scored a goal and assisted on Connor Ledger’s goal to get the Eagles started. Owen Johnson scored the final two goals for Montgomery Academy (2-0), the first with an assist from Win Berry, the final on an assist from John Allen Lachney.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Montgomery Academy 6, Catholic 0

Kaitlin Phenix scored three goals, Leighton Robertson scored two and Katherine Sinco added one as the Eagles won in convincing fashion at Catholic on Thursday night.

“I was very pleased with the fast start tonight,” MA coach Joe White said. “We saw ourselves up five within the first 15-20 minutes; however, I felt like we didn’t do ourselves justice in the second half in terms of our performance. That being said, I’m incredibly proud of the defensive discipline that we showed and keeping another clean sheet is a big bonus for us.”

Montgomery Academy (2-0) returns home to play Brew Tech on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

 

GOLF

Tuscaloosa Academy wins Macon East Invitational

The Knights opened the 2020 season with a 328 to edge Morgan Academy by two strokes and capture the Macon East Invitational at Arrowhead Country Club on Thursday.

TA was led by William Beeker’s 79, followed by Logan Harris (80), Walt Denney (84) and Cooper Smith (85).

The Knights return to action on March 23-24 at the Oak Hill Invitational, held at Mossy Oak and Old Waverly Golf Clubs in West Point, Miss.
