PREP UPDATE: ACA baseball, St. James softball win in Gulf Shores

BASEBALL

Alabama Christian 4, Brighton (Tenn.) 3 (9)

GULF SHORES -- Mac Moorer and Landon Nelson combined to hold Brighton to one earned run as the Eagles won their opening game in the Gulf Coast Classic with a 4-3 win in nine innings at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Monday morning.

Moorer pitched the first 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out four. Nelson came on in relief and pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

At the plate, Jackson McGuire went 2 for 5 with two RBIs, Jackson Burton went 1 for 4 and drove in a run and Bryson Dabney went 1 for 2 and drove in a run.

Alabama Christian (5-7) returned to action later on Monday against Hilldale (Okla.) at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

 

Autauga Academy 5, Lowndes Academy 3

PRATTVILLE -- Colin Edwards pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits while allowing just two earned runs in a 5-3 win over Lowndes Academy on Monday.

Bradyn Stokes went 2 for 3 with a run scored to lead the Rebels, while Ashton Yelder went 1 for 3 and drove in a run.

Yelder allowed three runs, two earned, in six innings while walking five and striking out six. Stokes pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up the final two runs on two hits in the seventh inning.

 

Lowndes Academy 5, Southern Academy 0

GREENSBORO -- Cooper Dansby pitched a three-hit shutout, walking three and striking out three, in the Rebels’ 5-0 win over Southern on Saturday.

Grant Casey went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Dansby went 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI and Clayton Hussey went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

 

SOFTBALL

St. James 8, Mountain Home (Ark.) 1

GULF SHORES -- Peyton Middleton pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits but staying out of trouble by surrendering just one run with six strikeouts and no walks in the Trojans’ win over the Bombers in the Gulf Coast Classic at Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Monday afternoon.

Kaitlin Hudson went 2 for 4 and scored twice, Sydney Johnston went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI and Emily Darby went 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead the Trojans. Arden Green went 2 for 3 with a double, scored a run and drove in another, Emily Needham went 1 for 3 with a double and drove in a run and Lily Stanford went 2 for 3 and scored a run.

Daelyn Harper went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Kiley Horne went 2 for 3 to lead the Bombers.

St. James (12-0) will return to action on Tuesday in the tournament.

 

St. James 2, White House (Tenn.) 1

GULF SHORES -- Emily Needham pitched a two hitter, walking two and striking out eight in the Trojans’ 2-1 win over White House in the opening game of the Gulf Coast Classic at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Monday morning.

Tat Shuford went 3 for 3 with a double and drove in both of the Trojans’ runs in the first inning. Kaitlin Hudson went 3 for 4 and scored a run and Needham went 2 for 3 with a double as the trio accounted for eight of the Trojans’ 11 hits.

St. James (11-0) returned to action later in the day against Mountain Home (Ark.).

Leigh Ann Sanders went 2 for 3 and drove in the Blue Devils’ only run. Ashlyn McCray went the distance in the circle, allowing nine hits and no earned runs while walking one and striking out five.

 

Wicksburg 12, Pike Road 1

GENEVA -- Kennedy Cuthbert homered to lead the game off but Wicksburg’s Eleanor Cox only allowed singles to Ava Milton and Kasyn Wilson the remainder of the way in a 12-1 victory over the Patriots in the semifinals of the Geneva Tournament on Saturday.

Cox had nine strikeouts to lead Wicksburg into the finals and eventually the tournament championship.  

Pike Road (10-6) returns home to play Smiths Station on Tuesday.

 

Pike Road 6, Zion Chapel 4

GENEVA -- Kennedy Thompson, Addison Belyeu and Anna Williams each had two hits and 2 RBIs to lead the Patriots to a 6-4 win over Zion Chapel in the quarterfinals of the Geneva Tournament on Saturday.

Kasyn Wilson added two hits as well. One of Thompson’s hits was her first career home run. Ameria Anderson added a single.

Anna Williams picked up the win in the circle, allowing just one run while striking out three in four innings of work. Seventh grader Abbie Olesen pitched an inning and gave up three runs on two hits.

 

Wicksburg 3, Pike Road 1

GENEVA -- Eleanor Cox pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 to win her pitching duel with Haley Melton as Wicksburg defeated the Patriots 3-1 in the Geneva Tournament on Saturday.  

Melton allowed just four hits and one earned run, striking out three and walking two.

Addison Belyeu hit her fourth home run of the season for the Patriots in the top of the sixth. Kennedy Thompson and Kasyn Wilson added singles for Pike Road.

 

Brantley 3, Pike Road 1

GENEVA -- Alex Grimes hit a three-run home run in the third inning to lift the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win over the Patriots in the opening round of the Geneva Tournament on Saturday.

Pike Road’s Kennedy Cuthbert hit her sixth home run of the year in the top of the third to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Grimes hit a fly ball to deep center field that was caught on the run by Pike Road center fielder Kelsey Williams, but she lost the ball as she collided with and flipped over the portable outfield fence.

Addison Belyeu and Ava Milton had the only other hits for Pike Road. Anna Williams pitched a great game, striking out five and allowing just five hits.
