PREP UPDATE: PCA softball topples Trinity; STJ shuts out ACA to finish with perfect Area slate

SOFTBALL

Prattville Christian 13, Trinity 1

PRATTVILLE -- Saniyah Weaver and Addison Byrd had two-run hits as part of an eight-riun second inning to help the Panthers to an easy 13-1 win over the Wildcats on Thursday.

Weaver doubled in a pair of runs, a Peyton Thrash groundout plated another run, Chloe Hollon and Caralee Janes both singled in runs, Megan Masters followed with an RBI double and Byrd singled in two more runs for the Panthers.

Thrash and Byrd each had three hits, while Weaver, Hollon, Thrash and Byrd each drove in a pair of runs.

Alivia Messick allowed just one hit and one run, none earned, in four innings of work in the circle, striking out five and walking one. Holley Beth Rollan pitched the fifth, allowing one hit while striking out one.

PCA (30-5) will hold the PCA Spring Fling this weekend, hosting Pelham at 9 a.m. and T. R. Miller at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

 

St. James 6, Alabama Christian 0

The Trojans closed out their area schedule undefeated for the third consecutive year, shutting out Alabama Christian 6-0 on Thursday at Denise Ainsworth Field.

St. James finished 3A Area 5 play at 6-0, followed by Trinity at 4-2, Alabama Christian at 2-4 and Montgomery Academy at 0-6.

Emily Needham went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI at the plate and pitched a four hitter in the circle, walking two and striking out 16.

Kaitlyn Hudson went 3 for 4 and scored a run, Ava Stanford went 2 for 4 and scored twice and Tat Shuford went 1 for 3, scoring a run and driving in another.

Alabama Christian managed just four hits off Needham, getting singles from Izzy Warrick, Elizabeth Hall, Anna Gleason and Maddie Owens.

Warrick took the loss in the circle, giving up six hits and five runs, two earned, in four innings while striking out three and walking two. Maddie Traywick pitched the remaining three innings, allowing four hits and one run, none earned, while walking two and striking out three.

St. James (37-6) travels to Tallassee for a tournament this weekend.

St. James 10, Elmore County 8

St. James scored two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie, holding off a furious Panther three-run rally in the seventh that fell just short.

Tat Shuford went 2 for 3 with a home run, scoring twice and driving in three runs to lead the Trojan offense at the plate. Ava Stanford went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored three times and Mary Olive Maddox went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs. Kaitlyn Hudson went 2 for 4 and scored twice and Emily Darby went 1 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs.   

Peyton Middleton picked up the win in the circle, giving up 13 hits and eight runs in seven innings.

Addy Peaden went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI to lead Elmore County. Addison Hicks and Kayden Edwards both went 2 for 4 and drove in a run and Abigail Holt went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs.

Addi Stephenson took the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and five runs in three innings pitched. Lalah Culpepper pitched the final three innings, allowing four hits and five runs.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Catholic 2, Prattville 0

Anna Russo assisted on one goal and scored on another to help the Knights to a 2-0 win over Prattville on Wednesday at Catholic.

Kate Johnson scored the Knights’ first goal with an assist from Russo before Russo scored a goal with an assist from Ellie Wallock.

Goalkeeper Kyleigh Harris picked up her 11th shutout of the season and recorded five saves during the game. The Knights took a total of 23 shots with 10 of those shots being on goal, while the Lions took 12 shots and five of those shots were on goal.

Catholic (16-4) closed out the regular season with the win, outscoring 20 opponents 101-16 this season. The Knights will host American Christian Academy in the first round of the upcoming Class 4A state playoffs.

 

St. James 1, Tallassee 0

WETUMPKA -- KK Corley converted the game winning goal with an assist by Natalie Barton to defeat Tallassee 1-0 on Thursday at the Wetumpka Sports Complex.

Stella Williams recorded her 10th shutout of the season with several critical saves, extending her streak to six matches without a goal dating back to an April 1 loss at Catholic.

St. James (12-2) improved to 8-1 in 4A Area 3 play and will close out the regular season next Tuesday at Trinity at 5:30 p.m. before opening play in the state playoffs the following week.

GIRLS TENNIS

Catholic finishes second in section, advances to state tournament

CLANTON --  The Knights finished second in the 4A-5A Section 3 tournament on Tuesday, qualifying for next week’s state tournament at the Mobile Tennis Center on Thursday and Friday.

In singles play, Maria Schwarz at No. 1, Eliana Conceicao at No. 3, Macayla Marbury at No. 4 and Frances Ann Rogers at No. 6 reached the semifinals. Seventh grader Charley Frank won the section championship at No. 2 and senior Sophia Lopez won the section title at No. 5.

In doubles, Lopez teamed up with Rogers to win the section title at No. 3.

GOLF

Montgomery Academy 311, Pike Liberal Arts 331

Montgomery Academy won its match with Pike Liberal Arts, scoring a 311. Jack McIntyre was the low medalist with a 72.

Other Montgomery Academy golfers included Thomas Floyd and Connor Evans, who both shot a 79, followed by Barnes Trott (81), Joe Drumwright (83), Jackson Williams (85), Henry Robertson (86) and John Carson Bullard (88).
