Montgomery Academy wins ShrimpFest Tournament

GULF SHORES -- Montgomery Academy waged another intense back-and-forth battle with Spanish Fort on Saturday, defeating the Toros 25-23 and 25-19 to win the annual ShrimpFest Tournament.

The Eagles and the Toros faced each other in the semifinals of the Mayor’s Cup and will likely see each other again in the upcoming Class 6A South Super Regional.

The Eagles opened the week with a win over 7A Hoover, defeating the Buccaneers 20-25, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20.

In the ShrimpFest Tournament, the Eagles won all three games in pool play, defeating Lawrence County 25-17 and 25-13, Faith Academy 25-13 and 25-22 and Sylacauga 25-9 and 25-9.

In bracket play, Montgomery Academy defeated Briarwood Christian 25-15 and 25-22 to reach the quarterfinals. After defeating Mobile Christian 26-16 and 25-15, the Eagles advanced to the semifinals of the tournament where they faced Trinity.

Montgomery Academy defeated the Wildcats 25-19 and 25- 23 to reach the finals.

For the Eagles, Addi Vinson had 170 assists, 53 digs, 14 kills and six blocks, Elle McBride had 56 kills, 41 digs, 13 aces and five blocks, Caroline McDaniel had 27 kills, 35 digs, four aces and five blocks, Morgan Springer had 29 kills, eight digs, seven blocks and four aces, Kaci Armistead had 72 digs and five aces and Emmy Sorrell had 30 digs and four aces.

Montgomery Academy (47-3) will hold the 6A Area 4 Tournament on Thursday, playing Julian in the opening round at 3 p.m., followed by Stanhope Elmore and Wetumpka at 4:15 p.m. The championship game will be at 5:30 p.m., with both finalists advancing to the South Super Regional the following week at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.

 

Trinity reaches semifinals of ShrimpFest Tournament

GULF SHORES -- Trinity reached the semifinals of the ShrimpFest Tournament on Saturday before falling to Montgomery Academy in a fiercely contested match, 25-19 and 25-23. 

The Wildcats tuned up for the tournament with a win over Alabama Christian on Thursday, defeating the Eagles 25-19, 25-17 and 25-19 in the ACA gym.

In the ShrimpFest Tournament, the Wildcats won all three games in pool play, defeating Albertville 21-25, 25-12 and 15-7, Lauderdale County 25-17 and 25-18 and Saraland 25-16, 21-25 and 15-10.

In bracket play, Trinity defeated Northridge 25-17 and 25-16 to reach the quarterfinals, then defeated Pelham 25-22, 25-27 and 15-11 to set up the semifinal battle with Montgomery Academy.

For the Wildcats, Anna Moore had 73 kills, five blocks, nine aces and 42 digs at the tournament, while Lilly Smith had 90 digs and Ellie Causey had 11 aces, 46 digs, four blocks and 187 assists.

Trinity (33-10) will hold the 5A Area 6 Tournament on Thursday, playing the winner of Holtville-Marbury in the semifinals at 3 p.m., followed by Catholic and St. James at 4:30 p.m. The championship game will be at 6 p.m., with both finalists advancing to the South Super Regional the following week at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.

 

PCA advances to bracket play in the Supreme Courts Invitational

GUNTERSVILLE -- Prattville Christian advanced to bracket play in the Supreme Courts Invitational on Saturday before losing to Priceville 25-23, 13-25 and 13-25.

The Panthers went 2-1 in pool play, defeating Fayette County 25-18 and 25-14 and Cold Springs 25-7 and 25-12 before losing to Huntsville 23-25 and 16-25.

For the Panthers, Baylee Rogers had 65 assists, five kills, six aces and 20 digs, Leah Cate Wilson had 31 kills, an assist, two blocks and four digs, Emma Cate Carter had 20 kills, two aces, an assist, a block and 26 digs and Maren Diefenderfer had 19 kills, four blocks and four digs.

Natalee Wheeler had five aces, two assists and 29 digs, Paysley Bayer had seven kills and 11 digs, Morgan Fowler had two aces, eight assists and 12 digs, Aiden Williams had an assist and 10 digs, Brylee Byrd had two aces and 12 digs, Jenna McClendon had six kills, two blocks and two digs, Olivia Rossi had a kill and a block, Anniston Robison had two kills and two digs and Kenadie Minor had a kill.

PCA (36-14) will hold the 4A Area 5 Tournament on Thursday, playing Booker T. Washington in the opening round at 2 p.m., followed by Tallassee and LAMP at 3:30 p.m. The championship game will be at 5 p.m., with both finalists advancing to the South Super Regional the following week at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.
