PREP WEEKEND: LAMP boys tennis wins state title; Trinity baseball advances to third round

LAMP wins 4A-5A state championship

MOBILE -- The Golden Tigers won five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles to give LAMP its first boys’ tennis state championship in 4A-5A on Saturday.

In the previous 10 years, LAMP has finished in the top five every year, including runner-up finishes in 2018, 2021 and 2022. The last two years, the Golden Tigers lost on tiebreakers to Madison Academy.

This time, the Montgomery magnet school left no doubt, winning all but one singles match and winning two of the three doubles matches as well.  

Edwin Lee, the only senior on LAMP’s roster, won the No. 1 singles title, beating former 1A-3A state champion Mitchell Piedra of Houston Academy, 10-6, 7-5, 11-9, in one of the most competitive matches of the entire state tournament series.

LAMP finished with 70 points, followed by Houston Academy (55), Jasper (40), Russellville (30) and Boaz (25).

In addition to Lee, Ian Shin won at No. 2 by defeating Brody Williams of Houston Academy, 6-1, 6-2; No. 3 Ian Kim defeated Houston Academy’s Jason Mun, 7-5, 6-2; No. 4 Sun Ho Kim defeated Jasper’s Wilkes Hill, 7-5, 6-2; and No. 6 Wooseong Lee defeated Houston Academy’s Landon King, 7-5, 1-6, 10-7.

In doubles, No. 1 Edwin Lee-Shin defeated Piedra-Williams, 7-5, 7-5, and at No. 3, Sun Ho Kim and Wonjun Lee defeated Thomas Buntin and King, 6-3, 6-0.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

LAMP finishes in third at state tournament

MOBILE -- LAMP’s Grace Liu won her singles championship match on Saturday, lifting the Golden Tigers out of a tie with Russellville and helping them to finish in third place behind 2023 champion UMS-Wright and runner-up Donoho.

Inclement weather forced the postponement of several matches until Saturday and one singles match and one doubles match involved LAMP.

At No. 5 singles, Liu defeated UMS-Wright’s Rhea Mostellar, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Liu and Hannah Lee were defeated by UMS-Wright’s Kate Huddle and Mostellar, 6-2, 6-2.

UMS-Wright was awarded the championship trophy on Friday and finished with 83 points. Donoho was awarded the runner-up trophy on Friday and finished with 43 points. LAMP was third with 37 points, followed by Russellville (35), Houston Academy (29) and Jasper (24).

 

BASEBALL

Trinity 10-5, Satsuma 0-1

SATSUMA -- Both Trinity starters pitched three hitters to help the Wildcats to a doubleheader sweep of Satsuma in the second round of the 4A state playoffs on Friday.

Trinity (22-12) returns home to play host to UMS-Wright in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs next Friday at Whittle-Ragsdale Field.

Walker McClinton went the distance in the opener, a 10-0 win limited to six innings by the 10-run mercy rule. McClinton struck out five and allowed just three hits.

Fleming Hall had three hits and a walk in four at-bats, driving in a run. D.M. Lieux had a pair of hits and a pair of walks and Cooper Bernier and Brady Rascoll both had three RBIs.

In the second game, Wesley Stallings pitched a complete game, striking out three and surrendering just three hits, as the Wildcats scored four runs in the third and another in the fifth before allowing Satsuma to score a run in the top of the seventh.

D.M. Lieux had a pair of hits to lead the Trinity offense. Ross Sanders had a pair of RBIs and Cooper Bernier drove in a run as well.

 

SOFTBALL

Prattville Christian 1, Brantley 0

PRATTVILLE -- Saniyah Weaver doubled in Brylee Byrd for the game’s only run as the Panthers edged Brantley 1-0 in a game played at Prattville High on Saturday.

Lara Beth Nesmith pitched 6.2 innings, striking out eight, to get the victory. Alivia Messick came on in relief in the seventh inning with the bases loaded to get the groundout to end the game.

Payson Hanson went 2 for 4 to lead the PCA offense.

 

Prattville 6, G.W. Long 5

PRATTVILLE -- Chloe Hollon went 3 for 3, hitting three home runs, to lead the Panthers to a 6-5 win over G.W. Long in a game played at Prattville High on Saturday.

Sara Peyton Schmidt added a two-run home run and Brinkley Sailors went 2 for 2 and drove in a run as well. In addition, Sarah Williams went 2 for 3.

Alivia Messick picked up the win in the circle for the Panthers.

PCA (26-11) returns home to host the first round of the 4A Area 5 tournament on Tuesday. PCA will face the winner of the Wilcox Central-Dallas County game in the Panthers’ first game at noon.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Montgomery Academy girls win section track title

LINCOLN -- The Montgomery Academy girls won the 4A Section 2 track title, while the boys finished second in the section meet at Lincoln High on Friday and Saturday.

Both teams will compete in the Alabama High School Athletic Association state outdoor track meet in Gulf Shores on Thursday through Saturday.

Among the boys winners were Skyler Stovall, who finished first in the high jump with a school record jump of 6 feet, 6 inches, and Grant Casey, who was first in the 3200-meter run and third in the 800-meter run.

Chance Wilson was fifth in the 100-meter dash, Eli Jernigan was second in the 200-meter dash, Luke Jordan was third in discus, Picasso Avezzano was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, Rick McBride was sixth in the 200-meter dash and Derrick Vinson was eighth in the high jump. In addition, the 4x400-meter relay team of Avezanno, Jernigan, McBride and Bobby Bradford placed second.

Among the girls winners were Isabella Johnson, who placed first in discus and third in javelin, and Elle Ingram, who was second in both the 3200-meter run and the 800-meter run.

Brie McCendon was third in discus and fifth in javelin, Sarah Elizabeth Casey was third in the high jump, Killian White was fourth in discus, Ava Thomas was fourth in 300-meter hurdles, Bennett Britt was fifth in 300-meter hurdles, Bea Farley was fifth in the 3200-meter run, Elizabeth Ray was sixth in the 3200-meter run and Jai Ivy Raines was sixth in the long jump. In addition, the 4x400-meter relay team of Ava Thomas, Megan Link, Tara Samant and Bennett Britt was fifth, while the 4x100-meter relay team of Thomas, Raines, Britt and MJ Brown was sixth.
