PREP WEEKEND UPDATE: St. James girls roll Catholic; ACA, Lee-Scott split hoops doubleheader

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. James 74, Catholic 60

Natalie Barton connected on six 3-pointers and Kaitlin Mitchell hit five as the Trojans used a strong performance in the third quarter to rally past the Knights on Saturday in the St. James gym.

Barton finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Mitchell had 22 points, eight rebounds, four steals and six assists. Morgan Lilly added 18 points and dished out six assists.

The game was tight in the first half as the Knights led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter and 32-30 at the half. The Trojans came out of the break on fire, hitting seven 3-pointers in the third quarter to pull away.

Heaven Bailey led Catholic with 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Hannah Smith had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

St. James (13-1) will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Auburn to participate in the Reindeer Games tournament. Catholic will also return to action on Thursday, playing G.W. Long in the opening round of the 30th annual Jack Schweers Capital City Classic at Trinity.

Alabama Christian 51, Lee-Scott Academy 30

AUBURN – Katelyn Sutton had 17 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals to lead the Eagles to their 10th consecutive win with a 51-30 romp over the Warriors on Saturday in the Lee-Scott gym.

Sutton scored 14 of her points in the first half as the Eagles held a slim 24-21 halftime lead before outscoring Lee-Scott 16-4 in the third period.

Jaide Newkirk added 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots for ACA (10-1), including eight in the third quarter. A’Kirra McElveen added nine points and 10 rebounds and Evelyn Tankersley with eight points.

Sydney Dunlap and Kamdin Cleveland each had nine points to lead Lee-Scott.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lee-Scott Academy 84, Alabama Christian 44

AUBURN – Sam Davidson had 13 points and three steals to lead the Eagles in an 84-44 loss to the Warriors in the Lee-Scott gym on Saturday.

Mac Moorer added 12 points for ACA (7-4), all on four 3-pointers in the first half. AC Walters added eight points and seven rebounds.

Haiden Harper led Lee-Scott (13-1) with 17 points, including nine in a 35-point third quarter as the Warriors turned a 40-25 halftime advantage into a 75-39 lead. Emerson Myers had 19 points, including 15 in the first half, while Barrett Cook hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points and William Lyles had 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Wetumpka 76, Prattville 65

PRATTVILLE – Tanner Ehmen recorded his fourth double double of the season, scoring 11 points, pulling down 10 rebounds, blocking two shots and coming up with two steals in the Lions’ 76-65 loss to the Indians on Saturday.

Xavier Dunn led Prattville in scoring with 18 points and three steals, while Cameron Lewis had 15 points, three steals and four assists. Sai Patel added 11 points, three steals and three rebounds.

Catholic 56, St. James 52

The short-handed Knights won their first game of the season despite the absence of three starters because of football all-star appearances.

Patrick Evans led Catholic with 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and six assists, followed by Marquee Belser with 13 points, three rebounds, and three steals. JJ Williams added 12 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Antoine Dottery had seven points, four rebounds and seven steals.

Catholic (1-1) will resume play in the 30th annual Jack Scweers Capital City Classic at Trinity on Thursday.

Evangel Christian 52, Heritage Christian 34

Jordan Duncan scored 12 points to lead Evangel to the win over Heritage on Friday night. Tylon Shine finished with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. D'John Wright added six points.

The Lions (8-1) will host Cornerstone Christian on Friday.

Marbury 68, Prattville 59

MARBURY – Xavier Dunn had 20 points, three steals and three rebounds in Prattville’s loss to Marbury in the championship game of the Autauga County Basketball Tournament on Friday in the Marbury gym.

Tanner Ehmen added 11 points and 21 rebounds for his third double double of the season. Cameron Lewis added 11 points, three steals and four assists for the Lions (5-9).

Brew Tech 46, Catholic 42

Marquee Belser had 14 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots in the Knights’ season opening loss at Brew Tech on Friday.

Patrick Evans added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, followed by JJ Williams with nine points, five rebounds and two steals.

Catholic (0-1) will travel to St. James on Saturday.

Wrestling

PCA participates in Weaver High School tourney

The PCA Wrestling team traveled to Weaver High School to take part in the annual Gene Taylor Invitational.  The Panthers took a squad of nine varsity wrestlers for the tournament and finished eighth. 

At 150 pounds, Brysen Pugh finished third and at 215 pounds, Bryson Bowman finished fourth.  

The Panthers return on Saturday to host the 12-team PCA Duals tournament.
