PRESS PICKS: It's not kissing your sister... it's a tie!

After watching Penn State and Illinois wallow around and play nine “overtimes” before the Illini pulled off the upset, the obvious question arose…
What’s wrong with a tie?
Yeah, the “kissing your sister” line comes to mind. In reality, is that overplayed? It seems as though a tie has become as unwelcomed as a snake in the pantry.
As a whole, the world doesn’t like ties. We don’t like ants, either. Or weeds in the yard. Or incredibly small parking spaces.
But we tolerate them because we have to.
Ties are no different. They were a part of the college football realm for more than 100 years. Somewhere, somebody decided they weren’t fittin’ and the rules were changed. It happened in the 90s when offenses were getting faster and, to some, more exciting.
Yeah, we don’t like low-scoring games.
But we like talking about the decision Tom Osborne made when he and Nebraska had a choice and a kick an extra point that would have guaranteed a tie and a national title in 1983 (1984 Orange Bowl).
Ara Parseghian had the same choice in 1966 when he chose to take the tie against Michigan State, knowing the voters would select his Notre Dame Fighting Irish as national champs. (Yes, that still sticks in the craw of Alabama fans but so be it.)
It’s been a part of sports forever. But it can’t be revisited. That would be sacrilegious. It would cause damage to the college game. It would cause young fans to walk away. It would…
Do nothing of the sort. But some look at overtime as a step back in time. The old folks would like it so that makes it bad.
Unfortunately, the new procedure of two-point tries after two overtime periods is not the answer. Nevermind that Penn State and Illinois have offenses that Red Grange made famous. Yes, Saturday’s debacle sent football back in time to where the old people don’t like it.
If ties aren’t the answer, a single overtime period much like the NFL might be. There are plenty of ways to solve this issue.
Just solve it.
