PRESS PICKS: Three-way tie at the top after one week

We made it through the first week of football season. The prep scene was fantastic. This week we add the first college game that happens to be played in our back yard.
Austin Peay and Central Arkansas will meet Saturday night at Cramton Bowl to kick off the weird and wacky college season, complete with players, teams and conferences choosing to opt out.
The two teams were solid in 2019 with both making the Football Championship Division playoffs.
Ironically, both are in conferences that have decided to play in the “spring,” meaning this game is technically not part of their season.
Central Arkansas will play next Thursday in Birmingham against UAB while Austin Peay is lined up to face Pitt on Sept. 12. Then both teams will take the rest of the fall off and wait until January.
It’s all part of a strange but true season.
In high school, Lee and Jeff Davis lead off a big week with Prattville and Stanhope Elmore tangling in Millbrook.
Tallassee and Wetumpka will face off in a game that was to christen a new stadium. Instead, the two will play at the old Hohenburg Field.
Last week, Doug Amos, Graham Dunn and Tim Gayle took the early lead in the standings.
