PRESS PICKS (Bowl Edition): So long CBS, hello to ABC as the SEC exclusive broadcast partner

With the broadcast of the SEC Championship earlier this month, CBS presented its final broadcast of the league after 22 years. Since 2006 the network gave us the top matchups in the top league with a few heart-wrenching finishes, controversies and, of course, Gary Danelson, who has been the bane of SEC fans’ existence since he took over the color analysis job from the start of the contract between network and the league.
Beginning next year, ESPN/ABC/DISNEY has exclusive rights to all SEC broadcasts including football, basketball, baseball and any sport related to the league. They kicked off that marriage with a two-hour special hailing the new football schedules for 2024. It had the revalry of a old-folks convention.
While fans of the league finally learned where their team might play on a weekly basis, the more amusing aspect of the “reveal” came prior to the show when the networks teased the show with promos on everything from “Monday Night Football” to - are you ready? - “Good Morning America” where some cat who has never watched a football game in his life read a teleprompter promoting Alabama and Georgia’s matchup on Sept. 28. It was divine comedy as you could hear his co-hosts snickering in the background.
Those of us in the Deep South don’t need a shove to watch anything related to college football. But, apparently, the rest of the world does, hence the over saturation of discussion about next season and what people will miss if they don’t watch.
What does the change of networks mean to the true fans who have tuned in to CBS at 2:30 p.m. each Saturday for what was supposed to be the biggest game of the week?
For starters, there are now three timeslots that the league will dominate - 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. - all of which will feature a top matchup for the conference each week. Just looking at some of the weekends, you can expect a combination, say the week of Nov. 9, when Alabama visits LSU, Florida travels to Texas and Georgia goes to Ole Miss, will dominate those time slots. That is unless Oklahoma and Missouri would be a choice that week.
Or, how about Sept. 28 when the battle between Alabama and Georgia transpires, already set for prime time on ABC? Games such as Oklahoma-Auburn, Arkansas-Texas A&M and Ole Miss-Kentucky could join the broadcast highlight of the month.
Whatever the case, network television for more than one game is back and those with antennas rejoice.
The league along with the networks obviously worked on a schedule that will provide no less than three top-notch battles each week. Everybody gets a second open week this season, making the choices a little easier each Saturday.
There are a few questions to be answered, mostly, who will take the Thanksgiving night spot next season? The Egg Bowl has been a staple the last few seasons and has benefited from the exposure.
But that’s the spot Texas and Texas A&M occupied for many years before the separation took place back in 2012. The two are together again and might request the time slot and more than likely the networks will oblige.
The first weekend will most likely have a game or two move to Thursday night. In fact, we might see more games on Thursday throughout the season than in the past. No hint was given that would be the case but there are a few weekends where the amount of games far outnumber the time slots (Week 2 being one of those). Vanderbilt may not turn down a chance to be on ESPN if given that choice and could move the game on Sept. 21 against Missouri.
Drawbacks - ESPN-+ will take a few of the better matchups at times, and not just the “cupcake” games. The first weekend (Aug. 31) has 16 games but there are basically 12 slots (and ESPN still has contracts with the ACC, Big 12 and what’s left of the Pac 12). You might have to climb on the Internet to watch the likes of Kentucky-Southern Miss, Misosuri-Murray State and Furman-Ole Miss. That might not be a disappointment to most but don’t tell that to the fans of those respective schools.
However all of this lays out, it should be a good relationship for the two entities. The SEC gets prime treatment from an organization that knows how to promote everything to a hilt while the network gets a league that is watched worldwide.
