PRATTVILLE -- The Eagles won their first regular-season game on Wednesday, shutting out Prattville Christian Academy as Ruston Bassett earned his first hat trick of the season with two goals in the first half and another in the second.

Montgomery Academy (1-0) opened the season with a second-place showing in the Lakeshore Tournament and a championship in the Capital of Dreams Tournament last weekend before starting regular-season play on Wednesday.

Alex Kohn scored the first goal on an assist from Brewer Welch, then assisted on a Lukas Yi goal for a 2-0 lead. Bassett scored the next three goals, getting an assist from Ethan Yi on the first goal and from Kohn on the next two.

Bassett returned the favor, assisting Kohn on the Eagles’ final score.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday at noon at Pike Road.

GIRLS SOCCER

Montgomery Academy 3, Prattville 1

Sophia Cho scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third to help the Eagles to a win over Prattville on Wednesday night.

The first half was a slow and tiresome affair, with both teams clearly feeling the effects of last weekend’s Capital of Dreams Tournament. The first goal of the game came from some great work down the left side of MA’s attack, with Virginia Meacham finding Cho, who calmly placed the ball in the bottom corner.

MA started the second half with a much higher tempo, spending most of the second half on the opponents’ side of the field. The relentless pressure of MA resulted in a great run by Kerstin Daniels who was taken down in the box. The resulting penalty kick from Cho was saved by the Prattville keeper but she was unable to save the follow up from Cho, who got her second of the game.

Minutes later, MA would get a corner and Cho would deliver a great aerial ball that meets the head of Katherine Sinco, who netted her first goal of the year.

Prattville had a resurgence towards the end of the game and managed to pull a goal back with 10 minutes to go, but it was too late to challenge the Eagles.
